Sunrun (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RUN#NASDAQ">RUN</a>) shares are trading lower on Tuesday after GLJ Research analyst Gordon L. Johnson II issued a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/RUN/analyst-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">downgrade for the stock</a> from Hold to Sell.
Johnson noted the underlying equity is worthless unless SunRun can inflate the value of its solar systems to collect tax credits.

SunRun&#8217;s first-quarter 2025 financial disclosure, he said, currently has over one million systems on its balance sheet.
Johnson said that assuming each of SunRun&#8217;s systems is underwater by ~$600, SunRun burns $644.56 million annually in cash when considering the current systems it has in service, which assumes the company has stopped growing.
But, if SunRun stops growing, it cannot plug the -$644.56 million annual cash burn, creating a circular problem (the more SunRun grows, the more cash it burns), the analyst noted.
One of the benefits of perpetually understating O&amp;M costs is that it allows the overstatement of the value of the systems, enabling companies like SunRun, Sunnova and SunPower to claim tax credits beyond what would otherwise be available, he noted.
However, as detailed in the language from the U.S. Senate&#8217;s tax-and-spend bill, Johnson noted that residential solar finance companies would no longer be able to sell tax credits to third parties, which is potentially an existential threat to both SunRun and SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SEDG#NASDAQ">SEDG</a>) and, to a lesser extent, Enphase Energy (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ENPH#NASDAQ">ENPH</a>). Also, the analyst said the 45 times credits for solar production were left unchanged, marking an incremental positive for First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FSLR#NASDAQ">FSLR</a>).
In short, he noted that removing SunRun&#8217;s ability to sell tax credits to third parties and considering the company&#8217;s never making money creates a massive problem.
According to Johnson (like Sunnova and SunPower before it), covering the ~$600 per system hole inherent in SunRun&#8217;s business will quickly overwhelm the company, barring its ability to overstate the value of its systems and then garner tax credits on these overstated values. 
The key factor allowing SunRun to stay afloat has always been its ability to securitize loans or PPAs, bringing in hundreds of millions of new dollars each year, as per the analyst. 
He said that the company&#8217;s ability to securitize allowed it to cover the gap in its real O&amp;M expenses versus those it represented to the investing public. Yet, with the ability to securitize no longer there for SunRun (should the Senate&#8217;s version of the tax-and-spend pass), the company will quickly be unable to service its systems, Johnson said. 
The analyst noted that this task would fall on the sponsor equity, draining most of its cash flow, as it is below the tax equity investors in the partnership flip capital stack. This also means the sponsor equity investors in SunRuns&#8217; asset-backed security (&#8220;ABS&#8221;) bonds will quickly &#8220;head for the hills,&#8221; he added.

Wall Street took a sharp and unexpected turn lower by midday Tuesday as geopolitical fears surged following an Axios News report that President Donald Trump will meet with his national security team in the White House Situation Room to decide U.S. policy regarding the escalating war <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/middle-east">between Israel and Iran.</a>
According to <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/06/17/trump-situation-room-meeting-iran-israel-war">Axios</a>, U.S. officials said Trump is seriously considering direct military intervention, including a potential strike on Iran's underground uranium enrichment facility in Fordow. The situation began unfolding after Trump abruptly left the G7 summit in Canada late Monday and called for Iran's "unconditional surrender" on Tuesday.
Iran swiftly responded by ordering evacuations in Tel Aviv and Haifa, intensifying fears of regional war.
Major U.S. stock indexes fell in midday trading, as investors digested the threat of U.S. involvement in another Middle East conflict.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stocks Fall, Solar Sector Gets Hammered By Senate Bill</h3>
The S&amp;P 500 declined 0.5% to 6,000 points, and the Nasdaq 100 slid by over 130 points, or 0.6%, to 21,800.
Volatility spiked during the session as the CBOE Volatility Index, commonly known as the VIX or Wall Street&#8217;s fear index, surged 7.6%. 
Treasury yields plunged, with 30-year yields down 6 basis points to 4.90%. The dollar rallied reflecting appetite for safe havens. 
Oil price soared 1% to $72.5 a barrel. Sector-wise, energy was the lone area in the green, buoyed by expectations of rising crude prices if the Middle East conflict intensifies. 
In contrast, the consumer discretionary and healthcare sectors led the market's losses, with the latter penalized by fresh advertising restrictions.
Defense contractors rallied sharply as the specter of military conflict lifted expectations for increased government defense spending. RTX Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RTX#NYSE">RTX</a>) advanced 1.2%, Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LMT#NYSE">LMT</a>) climbed 2.9% and Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NOC#NYSE">NOC</a>) gained 1.6% by midday.
Meanwhile, a draft version of the Senate's "Big Beautiful Bill" revealed plans to phase out all federal tax credits for solar and wind energy projects by 2028. These incentives were established under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
The announcement triggered a broad selloff across solar-related stocks. The Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAN#NYSE">TAN</a>) plunged 9% in midday trading. Among individual names, Sunrun Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RUN#NASDAQ">RUN</a>) collapsed 40%, SolarEdge Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SEDG#NASDAQ">SEDG</a>) dropped 35%, and Enphase Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ENPH#NASDAQ">ENPH</a>) fell 25%. Industry bellwether First Solar Inc. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Apple Revenue Growth, Innovation Slowing</h2>
The company's latest net sales trend shows just a 12% year-over-year increase &#8211; a figure that barely keeps pace with inflation. When adjusted for price hikes, actual unit growth appears stagnant.
Worse, innovation seems to be slowing. Apple's product lineup, while polished, lacks the wow factor or competitive edge needed to convert new users in droves. Unlike the Android universe, which offers a range of devices at multiple price points, Apple's model seems geared toward retention &#8211; not aggressive expansion.
With little in the way of AI leadership and a Services segment facing margin pressure (more on that in a moment), Rao says, &#8220;Apple is better understood as a &#8216;value&#8217; stock instead of a &#8216;growth" stock.'&#8221; And that's not necessarily a bad thing.
For dividend-driven investors, Apple may be carving out a new niche. While its 0.5% yield pales in comparison to energy giants, it beats peers like Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>). And its global consumer base and strong balance sheet position it as a potential bellwether for economic stability.
If you're seeking the next breakout tech name, Apple may no longer fit the bill. But for those seeking stability and modest income, it might just be settling into a new, quieter kind of greatness.
