The stock market is reacting to the first 2024 presidential debate and prison stocks could be the winner based on what was said by the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/06/39543594/biden-vs-trump-flash-poll-picks-debate-winner-but-over-one-third-of-voters-doubt-his-ability-to-lead"> two candidates Thursday night.</a>
What Happened: A public company co-founded by former President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/social-media/24/06/39490695/trump-media-technology-group-in-focus-for-2024-presidential-debate-will-publicly-traded-comp">was in the spotlight</a> during the week heading into the election, but it may have to take a back seat to a new investment idea for the 2024 election.
Shares of Trump Media &amp; Technology Group (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DJT#NASDAQ">DJT</a>) were up 13% in premarket trading Friday before falling and trading in the red by midday. The stock surged by double digits last week as investors saw it as a prime opportunity to gain exposure to Trump.
While the Trump-connected social media stock couldn't hold its gains after the debate, two prison stocks were enjoying a lift the morning after the debate.
The Geo Group (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GEO#NYSE">GEO</a>) and CoreCivic Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CXW#NYSE">CXW</a>) are up 4% and 3% respectively at the time of writing.
The prison stocks are trading higher after immigration and the border were among the most talked about topics during the 2024 presidential debate.
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/24/05/38882141/exclusive-andrew-left-shorted-gamestop-here-are-his-3-long-stock-ideas">Benzinga recently highlighted</a> The Geo Group as one of the stocks recommended by Citron Research's Andrew Left. While Left is best known for his short calls, including betting against GameStop, he has been a bull of The Geo Group for some time.
"Definitely think the stock's going to $30," Left recently said.
Left said he started writing about the private prison company when it was $8 a share. "They do the job that no one wants to do."
He noted that the company handles immigration detention centers and prisons, and has government contracts in place.
According to Left, the Biden administration&#8217;s efforts to eliminate private prisons initially devastated the stock. However, with the news cycle now heavily focused on the migrant crisis, Left believes this presents the perfect setup for the company and its stock to rebound.

A <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/06/39534741/presidential-debate-goes-interactive-drinking-game-bingo-prediction-contest-for-2024-elect">drinking game</a> by the New York Post highlighted that Trump mentioned migrant crime twice during the debate, while the border was referenced 15 times overall. For comparison, Russia, which was anticipated to be a major topic, was mentioned 13 times.
Immigration is becoming one of the biggest topics for voters in the 2024 election. A recent Morning Consult poll of nationally registered voters revealed that 65% of voters consider immigration to be &#8220;very important&#8221; to their vote in the 2024 election, up from 50% who said the same in November 2022.
While Trump is known for his tough comments on immigration, President Joe Biden recently announced new restrictions on asylum for people who cross the southern border illegally.
The Geo Group and CoreCivic shares could be trading higher based on Trump being the perceived winner of the first 2024 presidential debate, but based on immigration taking center stage, prison stocks may be able to enjoy gains going forward with either candidate in the White House in 2025.
A planned second presidential debate could see immigration take center stage again, and both candidates are likely to use the topic on the campaign trail.

Nasdaq Surges 100 Points; CoreCivic Shares Plummet

CoreCivic, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CXW#NYSE">CXW</a>) stock is moving lower Tuesday after the company announced that it received a termination notice from the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/wiim/24/06/39267759/corecivic-shares-are-trading-lower-after-the-company-announced-that-it-received-a-notice-from-the-u">U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE)</a>.
What To Know: The company received notice from ICE that it will terminate CoreCivic&#8217;s services at the South Texas Family Residential Center effective around August 9.
The South Texas Family Residential Center currently focuses on the detention of single adults with a population of about 1,561. CoreCivic is halting its financial guidance for fiscal year 2024. The company anticipates impact resulting in a decrease of fiscal year EPS by around 38 to 41 cents.

뉴욕 포스트(New York Post)의 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/06/39534741/presidential-debate-goes-interactive-drinking-game-bingo-prediction-contest-for-2024-elect" target="_blank" rel="noopener">드링킹 게임</a>은 트럼프가 토론 중에 이민자 범죄를 두 번 언급한 반면 국경은 전체적으로 15번 언급되었다는 점을 강조했다. 이에 비해 주요 화두가 될 것으로 예상됐던 러시아는 13차례나 언급됐다.
2024년 대선에 있어서 이민 문제는 유권자들에게 있어서 가장 중요한 주제 중 하나로 자리잡고 있는 것으로 보인다. 전국적으로 등록된 유권자들을 대상으로 한 최근 모닝 컨설트(Morning Consult)의 여론 조사에 따르면 유권자의 65%가 이민이 2024년 선거에서 자신의 투표에 &#8220;매우 중요&#8221;하다고 생각하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 2022년 11월의 50%보다 증가한 수치이다.
트럼프는 이민에 대해 강경한 발언으로 유명하지만, 조 바이든 대통령은 최근 불법적으로 남부 국경을 넘는 사람들에 대한 망명에 대한 새로운 제한을 발표했다.
지오 그룹과 코어시빅 주식은 트럼프가 2024년 첫 대선 토론회에서 승자로 인식됨에 따라 더 상승할 수 있다. 그러나 이민이 중심이 되는 상황에 따라 교도소 주식은 두 후보 중 누가 2025년 백악관에 가더라도 앞으로 이익을 누릴 수 있을 수 있다.

GEO, CVX 주가 움직임: 지오 그룹의 주식은 금요일 시장 마감 후 시간외 거래에서 2.02% 하락한 14.07달러를 기록했다. 이 주식의 52주 변동폭은 6.94달러에서 16.31달러이다.
코어시빅의 주식은 금요일 시간외 거래에서 0.15% 상승한 13.00달러를 기록했다. 이 주식의 52주 변동폭은 9.06달러에서 16.54달러이다.
