Rising labor costs for U.S. automakers are sowing the seeds for deeper investment in automation after settlements last year to end a month of strikes at car plants across the country saw automakers agree to large wage increases for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/23/10/35492334/gm-uaw-reach-tentative-agreement-potentially-putting-an-end-to-costly-6-week-strike">American auto workers</a>.
The Big Three Detroit motor manufacturers agreed to pay United Auto Workers union members wage increases of around 25% in November, which will push up labor costs significantly for Ford (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>), General Motors (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and Stellantis (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLA#NYSE">STLA</a>), which was formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and France&#8217;s Peugeot.
This is obviously great news for the unionized workers — but if automakers increasingly look toward automation to mitigate these rising labor costs, it could prove to be a longer-term negative for UAW workers.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">UAW&#8217;s Costly Labor Agreement</h2>
Ford disclosed in November that the labor deal would cost it around $1.7 billion in lost profits for 2023, and that over the four-year term of the contract it would add a total of $8.8 billion in costs.
&#8220;We have our work cut out for us,&#8221; CFO John Lawler told a Barclays Investor conference at the time, after divulging the labor deal had cost four times that of the previous agreement in 2019. Ford execs had expected it to cost only twice that of the 2019 deal.
Lawler later said that Ford was looking at &#8220;opportunities in automation&#8221; when asked how the company would offset these costs.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Digital Age Descends On Car Industry</h2>
This could be a big threat to the UAW. The contract signed between the union and the Big Three was for four years. After this time is up, new negotiations will be underway and unions are likely to be negotiating on more than pay.
&#8220;The digital age has arrived faster than expected and is only accelerating, and the result will be the mass replacement of human labor by automation,&#8221; said Tomer Simon, chief scientist at Microsoft&#8216;s R&amp;D Center in Israel.
Hollywood actors and writers were striking at the same time as the carmakers last year. Their beef was on the use of artificial intelligence and other technologies in TV and movie making. Their concerns addressed issues such as the use of computerized simulations of actors and writers becoming relegated to editing AI-generated scrips.
Writing in the Harvard Business Review, Yossi Sheffi said of the UAW deal: &#8220;The agreement has achieved significant pay gains for workers but fails to adequately address issues such as how to prepare employees for automation.&#8221;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Robotics, AI Firms Could Be Winners</h2>
So which companies are the motor manufacturers going to be looking at in the quest to deepen their already large presence in automation? Car manufacturers are already large stakeholders in the robotics industry and are increasingly becoming so in artificial intelligence. 
Among the biggest makers of automated manufacturing equipment are Sweden&#8217;s ABB (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABBNY#OTC">ABBNY</a>) and Japan&#8217;s Denso Corp (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DNZOY#OTC">DNZOY</a>) and Fanuc Corporation (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FANUY#OTC">FANUY</a>).
But domestic companies such as Rockwell Automation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ROK#NYSE">ROK</a>), which is developing robots to automate the EV industry, and Magna International (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MGA#NYSE">MGA</a>), which automates the manufacture of components such as electronics, are likely to be part of this revolution.

The S&amp;P Corelogic Case-Shiller home price index and the FHFA house price index for March will be released at 9:00 a.m. ET. Data on new home sales for April, Conference Board&rsquo;s consumer confidence index for May and Richmond Fed&#39;s manufacturing index for May will be released at 10:00 a.m. ET. Federal Reserve Governor Randal Quarles is set to speak at 10:00 a.m. ET.
Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 89 points to 34,441.00 while the Standard &amp; Poor&rsquo;s 500 index futures rose 13.25 points at 4,207.00. Futures for the Nasdaq 100 index rose 73.25 points to 13,708.50.
The U.S. has the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the world, with total infections in the country exceeding 33,143,740 with around 590,530 deaths. India reported a total of at least 26,948,870 confirmed cases, while Brazil confirmed over 16,120,750 cases.
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/investing/global-oil-storage-trends/">Oil prices </a>traded lower as Brent crude futures fell 0.4% to trade at $68.07 per barrel, while US WTI crude futures fell 0.5% to trade at $65.73 a barrel. The API&rsquo;s report on crude oil stocks will be released later during the day.

European markets were mostly higher today. The Spanish Ibex Index rose 0.2% and STOXX Europe 600 Index gained 0.3%. The French CAC 40 Index rose 0.1%, London&rsquo;s FTSE 100 fell 0.1% while German DAX 30 gained 0.8%. German economy contracted 1.8% on quarter during the three months to March, while Ifo Business Climate indicator climbed to 99.2 in May from 96.6 a month ago. Spain&#39;s producer price inflation surged 12.8% year-over-year in April.
Asian markets traded mostly higher today. Japan&rsquo;s Nikkei 225 rose 0.67%, while China&rsquo;s Shanghai Composite rose 2.4%. Hong Kong&rsquo;s Hang Seng Index climbed 1.75%, Australia&rsquo;s S&amp;P/ASX 200 rose 1% and India&rsquo;s BSE Sensex slipped 0.1%.

Broker Recommendation
Goldman Sachs upgraded Shake Shack (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/shak#NYSE">SHAK</a>) from Neutral to Buy and raised the price target from $107 to $109.
Shake Shack shares rose 5.5% to $89.24 in pre-market trading.

Honeywell, Denso Partner To Build Electric Aircraft Motors Amid Growing Demand

Lyft Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lyft#NASDAQ">LYFT</a>) is selling its self-driving unit Level 5 to&nbsp;Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tm#NYSE">TM</a>) subsidiary Woven Planet Holdings for $550 million in cash, the companies announced&nbsp;on Monday &mdash; a move that is expected to help the ride-sharing company hit its profitability target a quarter earlier.
What Happened:&nbsp;Woven Planet Holdings will pay $200 million upfront and the remaining $350 million will be paid over a five-year period. The deal will help Lyft shed $100 million of net operating costs and deliver profit faster than anticipated.&nbsp;
The San Francisco-based company said it now expects to become profitable on an adjusted basis before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the third quarter of this year, three months ahead of its previous estimate.
The Level 5 team will join the Toyota subsidiary dedicated to developing autonomous driving and other advanced mobility technologies. It will also use the Lyft system and fleet data to speed up the safety and commercialization of the automated-driving vehicles that Woven Planet will develop.&nbsp;

Why It Matters: The COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on the ride-hailing company in 2020 &mdash; forcing it to lower costs and restructure the business. The sale will further allow it to focus on its core operations.&nbsp;
The Japanese automaker&nbsp;Toyota had earlier this year revealed plans to develop and build autonomous minivans for ride-hailing networks with Aurora Innovation Inc, a Silicon Valley-based autonomous-driving startup with at least a $10 billion valuation and longtime supplier partner Denso Corp (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/dnzoy#OTC">DNZOY</a>).
Aurora in December last year <a href="https://aurora.tech/blog/aurora-is-acquiring-ubers-self-driving-unit-advanced">announced</a> the acquisition of Lyft rival&nbsp;Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/uber#NYSE">UBER</a>).
Price Action: Lyft&rsquo;s shares closed 1% lower at $63.06 on Monday but were up 2.5% in after-hours trading.
