The Fund seeks to track the investment results of the MSCI ACWI Select Energy Producers Investable Market Index (IMI) (the Underlying Index), which has been developed by MSCI Inc. (the Index Provider or MSCI) to measure the combined performance of equity securities of companies in both developed and emerging markets that are primarily engaged in the business of energy exploration and production. MSCI begins with the MSCI ACWI Investable Market Index (IMI), and then selects securities of companies at or near the initial phase of energy production that are primarily focused on oil and gas exploration and production, and coal and consumable fuels production and mining. The Underlying Index includes large-, mid- and small-capitalization companies and may change over time. As of August 31, 2023, a significant portion of the Underlying Index is represented by securities of companies in the energy industry or sector. The components of the Underlying Index are likely to change over time. The Underlying Index consisted of securities of companies in 29 countries or regions as of August 31, 2023.

As April comes to a close, it&#8217;s time to compile the rankings for the top-performing sector and industry exchange-traded <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">funds of the month.</a>
Taking a broader look at the stock market, the S&amp;P 500 Index, represented by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), finished April on a downturn, declining by approximately 3%. This marks the end of a five-month streak of gains.
Similarly, the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), experienced a 3.5% decline.
Among large-cap indices, blue-chip stocks showed slight underperformance, with the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) slipping by 4.5%.
Small-cap stocks, represented by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), plummeted by over 6%, marking their worst performance since October 2023.
Overall, it has been a challenging month for the stock market, primarily due to inflation surprises surpassing expectations. This has led to a recalibration of market expectations regarding potential Federal Reserve rate cuts.
Additionally, complex global geopolitical tensions have emerged, notably between Israel and Iran, alongside the ongoing issue in the Gaza Strip.
May is anticipated to start with a crucial event as investors await the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/macro-notification/24/04/38526201/is-hawkish-shift-on-inflation-imminent-wall-street-analysts-traders-brace-for-fed-impa">(FOMC) meeting on Wednesday. </a>
While no interest rate changes are expected, all eyes will be on Fed Chair Jerome Powell&#8216;s remarks to assess the Fed&#8217;s stance in response to recent inflation surprises.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Performance Of Sector ETFs In April 2024</h2>
At the sector level, only the utilities sector managed to avoid losses for the month, rising by 2.1%.
The largest stock contributors to the utilities&#8217; performance in April are NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEE#NYSE">NEE</a>), The Southern Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SO#NYSE">SO</a>), Dominion Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/D#NYSE">D</a>) and NRG Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRG#NYSE">NRG</a>) which showed monthly gains between 4% and 8%. 
Energy stocks remained broadly stable, while the other nine S&amp;P 500&#8217;s sectors showcased losses.
Real estate experienced the worst performance, down by over 7%, dragged down by its high sensitivity to interest rates, as Treasury yields increase across the board during the month. 
Following real estate, the technology and healthcare sectors also showed poor performance in April.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Performance Of Industry ETFs In April 2024</h2>
Based on the industry ETF list provided by BlackRock Inc.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>) iShares, only five out of the 25 industries managed to report gains in April. Among them, miners did well across the board, with silver, copper, and gold mining stocks reporting robust gains. 
Standout contributors to the mining industry&#8217;s outperformance in April were Pan American Silver Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PAAS#NYSE">PAAS</a>), up over 20%, Newmont Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>), up 14%, Anglo American plc (OTCPK: AAUKF), up over 40%
Energy producers also managed to end the month in the green.
On the bottom side of the industry rankings, homebuilders, transportation, biotech stocks, digital infrastructure and real estate all report losses between 7% and 9.6% in April.

Benzinga's Mandatory ETF Reading for September 5, 2013 

Recently, oil futures and oil-related equities have been in a malaise. Over the past three months, the U.S. Oil Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/uso#NYSE">USO</a>) is off 23.2 percent and the iShares Dow Jones US Oil Equipment Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/iez#NYSE">IEZ</a>) is lower by 18.3 percent. Meanwhile, the Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xle#NYSE">XLE</a>) looks good by comparison with a loss of just 12.1 percent.

Consequently, investors looking to bet on a rebound in the energy sector need to be ultra-selective about where they lay those bets. IEZ and XLE's declines indicate that it is not safe to just throw money at the largest, most recognizable names in the oil patch and hope for the best. If anything, recent returns show that strategy is a recipe for disaster. 

Patient investors looking to do some dip-buying in the energy sector should consider ETFs beyond the usual suspects. Here are some ETFs worthy a spots on investors' watch lists.

PowerShares Energy Exploration &amp; Production Portfolio (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pxe#NYSE">PXE</a>)
The PowerShares Energy Exploration &amp; Production Portfolio has a higher annual expense ratio than XLE and the Vanguard Energy ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vde#NYSE">VDE</a>), but PXE is worth paying up for. The PowerShares offering has <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/06/2663422/four-obscure-sector-etfs-outperforming-bigger-rivals">consistently outperformed its larger rivals</a>.

What is noteworthy about PXE is not just that it outperforms XLE and VDE, but how it accomplishes the feat. PXE is not excessively weighted to either Exxon Mobil (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xom#NYSE">XOM</a>) or Chevron (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cvx#NYSE">CVX</a>) and offers more exposure to mid- and small-cap energy names.

First Trust ISE-Revere Natural Gas Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fcg#NYSE">FCG</a>)
Natural gas futures have shown some signs of life recently, but the commodity is also showing an uptick in volatility. In the past five trading days, the U.S. Natural Gas Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ung#NYSE">UNG</a>) is up almost 15 percent, but this fund is not for the faint of heart. On Tuesday, UNG closed the session down over 3.4%.

Investors looking for a more docile way to play resurgent natural gas prices should consider the First Trust ISE-Revere Natural Gas Index Fund. As an equity-based fund, FCG is typically less volatile than UNG, but its holdings <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/05/2600146/contrarian-etf-bets-to-consider-fcg-iyw">should benefit from increased natural gas demand, higher prices and lower production</a>.

iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil &amp; Gas Exploration &amp; Production Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ieo#NYSE">IEO</a>)
With more than $285 million in assets under management, the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil &amp; Gas Exploration &amp; Production Index Fund is by no means small, nor is it anonymous. Still, size does not tell the real story of IEO's utility.

Not only is the ETF an ideal way to get equity exposure to various U.S. shale plays, the fund <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/06/2676801/how-to-play-the-oil-sands-boom-with-etfs-ieo-ipw-frak-snds">is also a credible avenue for tapping into Canada's oil sands region</a>. 

The downside of IEO is that it frequently lags XLE in terms of performance, but that situation is the result of IEO being home to stocks such as Apache (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/apa#NYSE">APA</a>) and Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/apc#NYSE">APC</a>) that are more intimately correlated to the price of oil than the likes of Exxon or Chevron. Ultimately, IEO is a double-edged sword when it comes to oil prices. Stay away from this ETF when oil futures are faltering. Embrace it when oil is surging.

iShares MSCI Global Energy Producers Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fill#NYSE">FILL</a>)
The newly minted iShares MSCI Global Energy Producers Fund arguably has the most conservative constituency of the funds featured on this list. The ETF is heavy on U.S. and European integrated names such as Exxon, Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-A) and BP (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bp#NYSE">BP</a>). 

There are two knocks on FILL. First, active traders probably will not like the fact that the ETF's average daily volume is barely above 6,300 shares. Second, integrated oil stocks have a tendency to lag rising oil prices because those high prices can crimp refining margins. 

On the bright side, FILL's price/earnings and price/book ratios are lower than those offered by the iShares S&amp;P Global Energy Sector Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ixc#NYSE">IXC</a>) and the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Energy Sector Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/iye#NYSE">IYE</a>), according to iShares data.

Bet on an Energy Sector Rebound With These ETFs (FILL, IEO, PXE)

Not to beat a dead horse, but oil futures, futures and their corresponding ETFs have seen better days. With enthusiasm for the Spanish bank bailout all but evaporated, West Texas Intermediate is again trading below $84 per barrel and Brent crude, the global benchmark, is trading below $99 a barrel. That comes on top a brutal May that saw U.S. oil futures plunge 17%.

Still, it pays to note that blood on the streets could be a sign to buy. Russ Koesterich, global chief investment strategist for iShares, remains bullish on the long-term prospects for oil. In a note <a href="http://isharesblog.com/blog/2012/06/11/why-oil-prices-can-move-higher/">published today on the iShares blog</a>, Koesterich cites increased production from sources where output costs are higher and a lack of OPEC spare capacity as two catalysts that could lead to an oil rebound.

To those two factors, Koesterich adds "Many of the largest oil producing countries – notably Saudi Arabia and Russia – now require a much higher price for crude in order to balance their budgets."

Many investors will no doubt consider the energy sectors standard fare, be that shares of Exxon Mobil (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xom#NYSE">XOM</a>) and/or Chevron (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cvx#NYSE">CVX</a>) , or ETFs such as the Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xle#NYSE">XLE</a>) or the Vanguard Energy ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vde#NYSE">VDE</a>). To be sure, there are some compelling valuations to be had with domestic oil stocks.

"Currently, US large cap energy companies are trading for roughly 1.5x book value, well below the market average and the sector's historical values," Koesterich said in the note.

The better opportunities may lie with higher yielding international energy names, "which are even cheaper than US large cap energy companies," according to Koesterich.

The iShares S&amp;P Global Energy Sector Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ixc#NYSE">IXC</a>) currently trades with a price/earnings ratio of less than 12 and 1.88 times the weighted average book value of its 91 constituents. On the other hand, the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Energy Sector Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/iye#NYSE">IYE</a>) has a P/E ratio of almost 13 and a book value of 2.2.

IXC allocates about 24% of its weight to Exxon and Chevron, but Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-A), BP (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bp#NYSE">BP</a>) and Total, Europe's three-largest oil companies, respectively, figure prominently in the fund's lineup along with other international oil names.

Another option for investors to consider is the iShares MSCI Global Energy Producers Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fill#NYSE">FILL</a>), which is <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/06/2649381/checking-in-time-to-fill-up-fill-xle-ixc">comparable to IXC on many levels, though the newly minted FILL has a lower expense ratio at 0.39% compared to 0.48% for IXC</a>.

Investors looking for some yield among emerging markets energy equities should consider Ecopetrol (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ec#NYSE">EC</a>), Colombia's state-run oil company. The shares currently yield 3.6%, triple the piddly yield offered by Brazil's Petrobras (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pbr#NYSE">PBR</a>). Ecopetrol is the largest holding in the Global X FTSE Colombia 20 ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gxg#NYSE">GXG</a>) and is also featured in the EGShares Energy GEMS ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ogem#NYSE">OGEM</a>), among other funds.

Koesterich Likes Global Oil Names (IXC, FILL, BP)

Following Wednesday's rally, stocks and equity-based ETFs suddenly look alluring, but when it comes to the energy sector, the Wednesday pop may amount to nothing more than fool's gold. Oil futures eked out small gains on Tuesday and Wednesday, but those meager gains haven't done much to put a dent in the almost 20% West Texas Intermediate futures have plunged since the start of May. 

Said differently, it's going to take a lot more confirmation before investors feel safe with the likes of the Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xle#NYSE">XLE</a>) again. XLE, which allocates roughly 35% of its weight to Exxon Mobil (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xom#NYSE">XOM</a>) and Chevron (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cvx#NYSE">CVX</a>), is focused primarily on U.S.-based energy producers. 

All that factoid means is that XLE has been a little less bad recently <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/05/2619860/etf-showdown-not-now-maybe-later">compared to internationally-focused energy funds</a>. With U.S. oil demand slack at the moment and Europe's sovereign debt crisis pressuring demand across the Atlantic, it's not unreasonable to say the near-term outlook isn't too rosy for oil equities and the relevant ETFs.

On the other hand, it must be noted that demand will continue to outpace supply in the coming years and to that end, there is a new ETF with global exposure investors may want to have a look at: The iShares MSCI Global Energy Producers Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fill#NYSE">FILL</a>). When FILL debuted earlier this year, <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/02/2310295/more-me-too-etfs-from-ishares-debut-today?utmsource=feedburnerutmmedium=feedutmcampaign=Feed3Abenzinga28BenzingaNewsFeed29">we argued the fund looked a lot like the iShares S&amp;P Global Energy Sector Index Fund (NYSE: </a><a class="ticker" href="/stock/ixc#NYSE">IXC</a>) and a little bit like the SPDR S&amp;P International Energy Sector ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ipw#NYSE">IPW</a>).

For example, Exxon, Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-A), BP (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bp#NYSE">BP</a>) and Total (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tot#NYSE">TOT</a>) represent about 41% of IXC's weight. That same quintet combine for roughly 42% of FILL's weight. Home to 200 stocks, FILL is larger in terms of holdings than IXC and IPW and cheaper than both with an expense ratio of 0.39%.

FILL shares another similarity with IXC and that is a large weight to the U.S. even though its name implies a more global posture. Overall, 45% of FILL's country weight is devoted to U.S. stocks while the U.K. and Canada combine for over 28%.

In the current market environment, one of FILL's pluses is that it offers relatively low emerging markets exposure as Brazil, China and Russia combine for just 10% of the fund's weight and that means investors dodge <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/12/05/2585937/problematic-petrobras-plaguing-brazil-etfs">excessive exposure to problematic Petrobras (NYSE: </a><a class="ticker" href="/stock/pbr#NYSE">PBR</a>) of Brazil.

Regarding valuation, FILL sports a price/earnings ratio of 13.1 and trades for just under two times book the weighted average book value of its components. IXC's P/E is 13.7 and that ETF trades at 2.1 times book value. Both compare favorably with the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Energy Sector Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/iye#NYSE">IYE</a>), which sports a P/E of 15.2 and trades at 2.5 times book value.

Beyond the obvious hurdle of near-term weakness in oil prices and demand, the other critical issue that must be acknowledged with FILL and comparable ETFs, is the ability of companies such as Exxon, Shell and BP to do two things. First, increase oil output with sacrificing profit margins, something investors are clamoring for with these companies, especially after first-quarter oil and liquids production failed to impress. Second, with integrated firms dominating FILL's lineup, it is essential these companies find a way to boost the profitability of their downstream operations. Either that or pull a ConocoPhillips (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cop#NYSE">COP</a>) and get out of the refining business altogether.

For now, wait for a rally led by high-beta fare to be reborn and confirm itself before FILL-ing up.
