DeepSeek&#8217;s AI model, reportedly uses &#8220;10 to 40 times less energy&#8221; than similar U.S. models, according to a <a href="https://www.eenews.net/articles/game-changer-what-deepseek-ai-means-for-electricity/">report </a>by E&amp;E News. 
Utilities and natural gas companies, which had been soaring on expectations of rising AI-driven electricity demand, suffered steep losses. According to Reuters, independent power provider Constellation Energy (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CEG#NASDAQ">CEG</a>) plunged by about 20%, Vistra (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VST#NYSE">VST</a>) dropped 30%, and Talen Energy (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLN#NASDAQ">TLN</a>) fell 22% after news of DeepSeek&#8217;s advancements hit.
While some experts believe this could reset expectations for power growth, others argue that broader electrification trends, including U.S. manufacturing expansion and cryptocurrency mining, will keep electricity demand high. 
&#8220;Overall electricity demand is still going to surge because other major drivers — particularly U.S. manufacturing and cryptocurrency — are not going to be affected by DeepSeek,&#8221; said Betsy Soehren Jones, managing director at West Monroe, as reported by E&amp;E News.
DeepSeek&#8217;s accomplishment could even cast doubt on nuclear power demand, which tech companies see as a key source of clean energy for AI development. Investors have expected high premiums for nuclear power, over $100/MWh, but new efficiency gains may change that, Jefferies said in a client note, <a href="https://www.argusmedia.com/en/news-and-insights/latest-market-news/2652323-deepseek-undermines-ai-power-demand-forecasts">according </a>to Argus Media.

BofA analysts see the sell-off as an overreaction and expect data center demand to stay strong once the turbulence subsides.
The report describes DeepSeek as "more evolutionary than revolutionary" and that AI-driven data centers will continue to drive power consumption.
Additionally, BofA notes that supply and demand pressures in the energy market remain tight due to industrial expansion and electrification. The need for stable energy sources like nuclear power remains essential.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Will DeepSeek Really Change The Power Scenario?</h3>
While DeepSeek's AI model has introduced uncertainty in the short term, some analysts believe the sell-off in power stocks may be &#8220;short-sighted and short-lived,&#8221; as energy economist Ed Hirs noted, per a Reuters report. Even with more efficient AI models, demand for electricity is likely to rise due to continued digitalization and electrification.
All said, despite the sharp reaction in the market, broader trends in electrification and technology-driven growth suggest that electricity consumption will keep rising.

Republican Win Likely To Lift Magnificent 7 Stocks, Democratic Sweep 'Better For Bonds,' Says WisdomTree

Clean energy jobs grew at <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/07/40051107/first-solar-reports-strong-q2-results-eps-beat-sales-up-24">twice the rate </a>of overall jobs in the U.S. in 2023, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released on Wednesday.
Jobs in that sector grew by 4.2%, or 142,000 positions, last year, compared to a job growth rate of 2.0% in the overall economy, the 2024 U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER) showed.
The report also revealed that unionization rates in clean energy reached 12.4% in 2023, surpassing a unionization rate of 11% for the entire energy sector, which added 250,000 jobs last year.
Clean energy sectors that experienced the greatest growth last year were zero-emission vehicle and renewable energy, as well as transmission, distribution and storage, according to the report.
 "Our policies are working. We are now starting to see the job impacts of investments made through the infrastructure and inflation reduction laws &#8211; first in construction and as America builds more of these factories, we'll see hundreds of thousands more," U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said in a statement.

"The data clearly show that clean energy means jobs – good jobs, union jobs, and jobs retained – in communities across the country as we race to dominate the global clean energy economy," Granholm added.
Clean energy jobs grew in all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 2023, led by a 7.7% increase in Idaho, followed by Texas at 6.0%, and New Mexico at 5.9%.
The solar and wind sectors reported respective job growth of 5.3% and 4.5% in 2023, the report stated.
 The DOE projects that the Inflation Reduction Act will double the share of electricity generation from clean sources by 2030, driven by growth in solar and wind. 
The report also said that there were 28,000 jobs in the U.S. last year that involved building new battery and solar module factories, ports for offshore wind, and warehouses to store and transport clean energy products.
&#8220;Thanks to the Biden-Harris administration&#8217;s historic investments, clean energy jobs are booming in every single state,&#8221; AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler said in a statement.
Price Action: Solar and wind companies are trending in both directions as of Wednesday&#8217;s early-morning trading.

Clean Energy Jobs Grow Twice As Fast As Overall Job Market In 2023: 'Our Policies Are Working'

The summer of 2024 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/40112086">keeps on breaking temperature records</a>.
Globally, July 2024 was the second hottest July in history after July 2023, according to a Thursday report by the European Union&#8217;s Copernicus Climate Change Service.
Global averages take into consideration the entire world's temperature, including the Southern Hemisphere, where winter occurs between June and September.
This July was cooler than last year's by just approximately 1 degree Farenheit (0.04 degrees Celsius), yet it was the hottest month on record for some regions, including the Western U.S. and Canada, as well as most of Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
Having a slightly less warm July than last year is no cause for celebration. July 2024 was the first time in 13 months that average temperatures didn't beat the previous historical record for that month and it hosted the two hottest days on record globally.&nbsp;
&#8220;We are not done with temperature records causing heatwaves &#8230; We know this long-term warming trend can be, with a very high level of confidence, related to the human impact on climate,&#8221; said Julien Nicolas, a climate researcher with Copernicus, to Reuters.
 July 2024 was on average 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.48 degrees Celsius) higher than pre-industrial levels on a global basis. 
In California, this July was the hottest month on record, with an average statewide temperature of 81.5 degrees Fahrenheit (27.5 degrees Celsius), beating the previous record of 79.8 degrees Fahrenheit (26.5 degrees Celius) set in July 2021, the San Francisco Chronicle <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/weather/article/record-hottest-july-california-19621377.php">reports</a>.
Death Valley, known for holding the record for the hottest place on earth, recorded its hottest month in history during July. The Death Valley National Park registered a 24-hour average of 108.5 degrees Fahrenheit (42.5 degrees Celsius) and a daily peak average of 121.9 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius).
Needles, a small town in California, dethroned Phoenix, Arizona as the hottest urban center in the country, with an average monthly temperature of 103.2 degrees Fahrenheit (39.5 degrees Celsius).

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Rising Temperatures: Stocks To Watch</h1>
The rising temperatures present an opportunity for investors, who might look at companies and sectors expected to grow in an increasingly warm Earth.
Companies producing air-conditioning units are first in line. Rising temperatures <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/39463207">will increase the need for air conditioning</a>. Companies in this sector may also see an increase in sales due to worsening air quality in major urban centers.
Valued at $138 billion in 2022, the air-conditioner market is expected to grow to $253 billion by 2031, according to a report by SkyQuest. This includes an average yearly growth of almost 7% between 2024 and 2031.
In North America, the total market for air-conditioners currently stands at $24.6 billion and is expected to reach $35.6 billion in 2030, as per a GrandView Research report.

Its shares have underperformed the market in recent periods although the company leads about 25% of the home appliance market in the U.S. In June, German appliance maker Bosch <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/06/39532615/bosch-bid-hype-fades-but-analyst-sees-whirlpools-potential">revealed interest in acquiring Whirlpool</a>, though a bid has not been confirmed. The company is down 10.7% on the month.</li>

According to a new report from The Brattle Group, investment in power transmission infrastructure will reach $16 billion per year in the U.S. and $5 billion annually in Canada, through 2030. Since the 1980s and the adoption of cell phones, iPads, computers and other "modern" conveniences, peak power demand has exceeded transmission growth by 25% each year. While the grid functions almost all of the time, it's far from perfect. Power interruptions and blackouts cost the American economy between $80 and $150 billion a year in lost productivity. Based on 1960s technology, the grid is essentially an antique and is nearly 100 years old in places. 

The recent report highlights the continued potential of North America's grid build-out. Brattle estimates that the U.S. will see $30 to $40 billion in annual economic activity and support 150,000 to 200,000 full-time jobs each year over the 20-year period. For Canada, the grid infrastructure investment will support between 20,000 and 50,000 full-time jobs annually.

This is not a pure play on utilities, but it is basically defensive as you'll find stocks like AT&amp;T (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/t#NYSE">T</a>) and CenturyLink (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ctl#NYSE">CTL</a>) among the top-10 holdings.
Another infrastructure play: First Trust NASDAQ CleanEdge Smart Grid Infrastructure Index Fund (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/grid#Nasdaq">GRID</a>): If you're betting on a boom in smart grid technology, GRID is your play. As an M&amp;A play, GRID may be a bit speculative at this point, but could bear fruit down the road.

ETFs For The Power Acquisition Binge

Morningstar has tried to be a content provider of consequence for ETFs yet somehow after years of trying they still appear to be clueless. The latest piece of work is <a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/214780-sizing-up-the-industrials-etf-landscape?source=feed">this post</a> that Seeking Alpha titled Sizing Up the Industrials ETF Landscape.
The article makes two main points, neither of which are very helpful. The first point can be dissected quickly which was that "for most investors, such niche funds are rarely an appropriate choice." Anyone using an S&amp;P 500 Index fund has about 10% in industrials. Any broad based, actively managed mutual fund anyone might be using benchmarks against some index that probably has a similar industrial sector weighting so there is a good chance of that actively managed fund having something like 10% in industrial stocks.
So if instead, someone puts that 10% into and industrial sector fund it is far from inappropriate. Further, the ETFs focused on in the article were all the big cap sector funds which are heavy in names like General Electric (GE), Minnie Mining (MMM) and UPS. People could easily make mistakes with these but "rarely appropriate" strikes me as a CYA comment which if true why even write the article?
Even less helpful was the bigger point that "industrials-sector ETF offerings remain remarkably scarce relative to other sectors." This point is so ignorant that I wanted to quote it so as not to muddle the meaning. The author would like to see a machinery ETF and a railway ETF and he thinks that the iShares Transportation ETF (IYT) provides a good alternative.

I've been saying for years that client holding PowerShares Water Portfolio (PHO) is a proxy for small cap industrial exposure; the current weight to that sector is 77%. Staying at the PowerShares site the PowerShares Aerospace &amp; Defense Portfolio (PPA) is 78% industrial stocks. There are several other funds from PowerShares with 40-50% in industrial stocks.
Then there is the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Aerospace &amp; Defense Index Fund (ITA) which is 99% industrials. The iShares S&amp;P Global Infrastructure Index Fund (IGF) which some clients own is about 40% industrials. The Market Vectors Global Alternative Energy ETF (GEX) has 70% in Alternative Energy Sources and 19% in Environmental Efficiency which if you look includes heavy exposure to turbine makers like Vestas Wind (VWDRY), meter makers like Itron (ITRI) and water treatment like Kurita Water Industries (KTWIY). One client gave us a mandate to buy GEX--not sure if that requires disclosure.
Moving on to First Trust the First Trust ISE Global Engineering and Construction Index Fund (FLM) is 93% industrials, the First Trust ISE Global Wind Energy Index Fund (FAN) is 44% industrials but is heavier in utilities, the First Trust ISE Water Index Fund is 51% industrials, the First Trust NASDAQ® Clean Edge® Smart Grid Infrastructure Index Fund (GRID) is 78% industrials.
The Global X China Industrial Fund (CHII) is, um, all industrials. Claymore has a solar ETF (KWT) with 84% industrials, airlines (FAA) 100% and water (CGW) 43%.
There are probably others as well. While the 40-50% funds are in the eye of the beholder the article misses the concept entirely of specialized funds as proxies for sector exposure. Just as ABB (ABB) is an infrastructure stock so too is it an industrial proxy, same as that First Trust Engineering and Construction ETF above. In addition to the concept not being understood I believe it is reasonable to conclude the article was poorly researched given there are some funds with 80-100% exposure to the sector not mentioned.
Neat looking fire trucks are part of the industrial sector, aren't they?

Does Morningstar Finally Understand ETFs? No They Don't

While the threat of European austerity has taken much of the wind out of the sails of the alternative energy movement in Europe, the region still produces much of its power through these renewable means. Spain and Germany, the two European countries with the most installed wind and solar generating capacity, are functioning more like islands. Similar to the United States, each nation’s electrical grid functions on its own and they are not interconnected. 
Aside from bailout talks, European Commission energy regulators are beginning to work together to develop a cross-European market and the E.U. will also address the issue in its energy infrastructure package to be announced later this year. Individual subsidies for solar companies may come to an end; but the Commission seems intent on reaching efficiency goals and better inter-grid connections. These infrastructure improvements might make a better long term investment rather than the alternative power producers. 
The First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/grid#NASDAQ">GRID</a>) is the best way to play the birth of the “smart grid” in both Europe and the United States. Another choice is the European utility heavy, SPDR FTSE/Macquarie Global Infrastructure 100 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gii#NYSE">GII</a>).

Electrical Grid Opportunities in Europe

Fitch Ratings recently came out with a report that Renewable energy now accounts for 9.1% of total electricity produced in the United States. Alternative and green sources of energy are projected to grow by 17% of electricity market share 2035. This is having dramatic effects on utility spending. 
In order to beef up energy efficiency and integrate these forms of greener energy into the grid, utilities have increased their transmission investments over the last ten years, more than doubling between 2000 and 2010. In order to avoid another massive blackout as with the now infamous 2003 Northeastern blackout, another key driver for future investments will be to bring power from renewable sources from faraway load centers. 
The single easiest investment in the area is the First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/grid#NASDAQ">GRID</a>). The exchanged fund follows 32 companies relative to creating a smart grid or energy efficient electrical grid. These include investments in General Cable (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bgc#NYSE">BGC</a>) and smart meter manufacturer Itron, (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/itri#NASDAQ">ITRI</a>). The fund charges 0.70% in expenses and could represent a good long term hold as play on the ever increasing spending in the area.
