Asia Ex-Japan And Europe Markets Gain, Dollar Cools - Global Markets Today While US Slept

Global coal consumption reached an all-time high in 2024, climbing to 8.77 billion metric tons as global electricity demand outpaced the expansion of renewable energy.
Despite its contribution to global warming, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/coal" rel="noreferrer noopener">coal</a> remains rooted in energy systems worldwide, and short-term consumption is set to rise.
"Coal is often considered a fuel of the past, but global consumption of it has doubled in the past three decades," The International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its latest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iea.org/news/global-coal-demand-is-set-to-plateau-through-2027" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>, revising coal demand higher.
This increase is primarily fueled by demand from countries like India and Indonesia, which offset reductions in coal use by advanced economies such as the United States and the European Union.
China plays a pivotal role in this trend, accounting for over a third of the world's coal consumption, as its demand reached 4.9 billion tons in 2024. Despite massive investments in renewable energy, coal-fired plants continue to generate about 60% of China's electricity.
Imports also hit a record, reaching 542.7 million tons of coal in 2024, a 14.4% increase from the previous year. Lower international coal prices allowed China to stockpile supplies and maintain stable domestic energy costs.
"The increase in China's coal imports in 2024 was supported by declines in seaborne coal prices, which encouraged import arbitrage in relation to China's domestic supply for a wider range of coal types," Toby Hassall, lead coal analyst for LSEG, said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/chinas-coal-imports-hit-record-high-2024-2025-01-13/" rel="noreferrer noopener">per</a> Reuters.
He estimated that its coal consumption grew around 1%, despite subdued consumption in the cement and steel sector owing to the real estate crisis.
China made notable progress in diversifying its energy sources, as the IEA expects it to account for almost 60% of global renewable energy capacity installed by 2030. However, these efforts have not been enough to reduce coal consumption significantly.
The IEA's analysis suggests that China will continue setting annual records for coal use for at least a few more years.
The IEA predicts global coal demand will plateau by 2027, though this stabilization will occur at record-high levels. However, these predictions should be taken with a grain of salt, as the agency has been moving the goalposts on peak coal use for years.
Given China's insatiable energy appetite and Donald Trump's second term, it wouldn't be surprising if consumption edges higher well into the 2030s.

China's Coal Consumption At New Highs, As Real Estate Crisis Fails To Slow Energy Demands

On Friday, January 10th, U.S. markets ended sharply lower, erasing early-year gains. Stronger-than-expected job data reignited inflation fears and reinforced expectations of cautious Fed rate adjustments. Just a few days ago, markets were encouraged by the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42789867/chinese-stocks-end-2024-in-green-after-a-3-year-retreat-franklin-ftse-china-etf-ishares-msci-china-etf-and-more-i">rebound in Chinese stocks</a> in 2024, after a three-year losing streak. However, a cloud of uncertainty looms over Chinese stocks and ETFs with exposure to them.
The Biden administration's call to blacklist two more Chinese tech giants—Tencent Holdings and Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL)—has sent shockwaves through global markets, as investors anticipate its impact on the already precarious <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/china">U.S.-China economic ties</a>.
Tencent, the world's largest gaming publisher, and CATL saw their shares plunge on Jan. 6.

Notable ETFs feeling the heat of being on high alert include iShares MSCI China ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MCHI#NASDAQ">MCHI</a>), which allocates the biggest chunk of its holdings (15.40%) to Tencent. The net asset value inched down 1% on Jan. 7.
SPDR S&amp;P China ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GXC#NYSE">GXC</a>): Known for its diversified holdings, this fund also allocates 11.42%, its largest for a single security, to Tencent. Other major Chinese firms like Alibaba (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) and Meituan also hold key spots in the portfolio.
Invesco China Technology ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CQQQ#NYSE">CQQQ</a>), which dedicates 100% of its assets to Chinese technology stocks, is particularly sensitive to geopolitical developments. Moreover, Tencent takes up 10.76% of the total assets.
Additionally, ETFs with heavy exposure to Tesla stock, like the Simplify Volt TSLA Revolution ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TESL#NYSE">TESL</a>) has also come in the line of fire, as CATL is a key battery supplier to the EV maker.
The move to add Tencent and CATL to a growing roster of &#8220;Chinese military companies&#8221; was part of the U.S.'s counteractive effort to China's military and industrial ambitions. While the designation doesn&#8217;t impose immediate sanctions, it discourages U.S. firms from doing business with these entities, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-07/us-blacklist-of-china-s-tech-giants-risks-even-faster-decoupling?srnd=homepage-asia&amp;sref=TBDibEcD">notes </a>Bloomberg, a sentiment that trickles down into investor psyche as well.
The blacklist now includes 134 Chinese companies, four of which happen to be China's top 20 by market capitalization, collectively valued at nearly $1 trillion.
ETF investors are now closely watching developments as funds with direct or indirect exposure to Chinese companies may face increased volatility.

China-Focused ETFs Face Uncertainty As US Blacklists Tencent, CATL

On Wednesday, January 8th, U.S. markets ended mixed as investors considered conflicting jobs data and reports of President-elect Trump possibly declaring an economic emergency on inflation. Federal Reserve minutes pointed to inflation concerns, while worries over tariffs and policy changes kept markets cautious.

Most S&amp;P 500 sectors ended lower, led by losses in materials, real estate, and energy. In contrast, utilities and financials outperformed, closing the session higher.
