What Happened: Bitcoin sailed above $107,000 during U.S. afternoon hours, following Day 1 of Trump's presidency, which made no mention of cryptocurrencies.



Profit-taking pulled the apex digital asset to the $105,000 zone in overnight trading.



Ethereum also made strides, rising to an intraday high of $3,360.



The recovery coincided with the formation of a dedicated task force by SEC's Acting Chair, Mark Uyeda, intending to develop a clear regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry.



The uptick hit traders betting on price declines in futures markets, with about $133 million in short positions getting liquidated.



Bitcoin's Open Interest jumped 4.71% in the last 24 hours. An increase in Open Interest, coinciding with an increase in the spot price, indicated an influx of new money into the derivatives.



That said, the number of traders shorting Bitcoin rose in comparison to those betting on a price increase, according to the Long/Short Ratio.

Trump Reverses Biden's AI Policies On Day 1: What It Means For Tech Giants Nvidia, AMD, Alphabet

Wall Street saw a strong preference for small and mid-cap equities, with the Russell 2000 index leading the market as investors bet on more domestic-friendly policies following Donald Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20 as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">the 47th U.S. president.</a>



The Russell 2000 rallied 1.7%, while other large-cap indices trailed behind. The Dow Jones, composed of non-tech blue-chip companies, rose by 1.2%, while both the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 edged up 0.9%.



Most sectors traded higher, except for energy. The announcement of a national energy emergency raised concerns about a fossil fuel oversupply, sending oil prices down more than 2%. WTI crude dropped to $72.10 per barrel.



In the Treasury market, yields fell as investors appeared convinced by Trump's pledges on inflation control and lower federal spending. The 10-year Treasury yield declined by five basis points to 4.58%.



One of the session's most notable moves came from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), which plunged 4.3%, marking its worst trading day since early August 2024. The decline followed a downgrade by Jefferies, citing challenges in iPhone sales in China.



In commodities, gold climbed 1.2% to a two-month high, aiming for its ninth gain in the past eleven sessions, supported by lower Treasury yields. In the crypto space, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rebounded 3% to $106,000 after briefly touching $100,000 overnight amid the absence of crypto-related remarks from Trump on his first day in office.

Small Caps Soar, Apple Slips, Treasury Yields Fall On Trump Day 2: What's Driving Markets Tuesday?

The Mexican peso and Canadian dollar weakened on Tuesday after President Donald Trump pledged to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">and Mexico starting Feb. 1.</a>



The move, tied to concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking, has sparked fears of economic disruption and rising costs for everyday goods.



"We are thinking in terms of 25% on Mexico and Canada," Trump said later on Monday, citing issues with &#8220;vast numbers of people&#8221; and "fentanyl" entering the U.S.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Increased Supply Chain Disruptions Or A Bluff? </h3>



Trump's tariff proposal could disrupt supply chains, given the scale of U.S. trade with its neighbors. According to ING Group economist Inga Fechner, 15% of all U.S. imports in 2023 came from Mexico, while 13.7% came from Canada.



"About a third of everything the U.S. imports would be affected by unilateral tariffs, potentially disrupting supply chains and impacting the economy significantly," Fechner said.



Mexico's share of U.S. imports exceeds 25% in seven categories, while Canada's share exceeds 25% in 20 categories. These categories include agricultural products, food and beverages, automobiles, metals, wood, and industrial products.



Fechner added that the tariffs could lead to price hikes on everyday goods, including a &#8220;typical U.S. breakfast.&#8221; Items like coffee, which are already seeing soaring prices, could become even more expensive in the months ahead.



On the contrary, Goldman Sachs economist Alec Phillips questioned the implementation of those tariff threats. 



While he said that Trump's comments on Canada and Mexico were "more hawkish than expected," he indicated that similar proposals in the past were not followed through.



Phillips reminded that Trump previously announced plans for tariffs on Mexico in 2019 and pledged to sign necessary paperwork in November 2024 to enact trade measures on Inauguration Day, neither of which materialized.



&#8220;Despite Trump's comments, we continue to believe the odds of a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico are low at 20%. We are lowering our odds of a universal tariff this year to 25%,&#8221; Phillips said in a note. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trudeau Vows Retaliation</h3>



Canadian outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau quickly pushed back on Trump's tariff proposal, vowing a robust response. 



Speaking at a news conference in Montebello, Quebec, Trudeau warned that Canada would match U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar if they were implemented.



"Canada will respond, and everything is on the table," Trudeau said, adding that the U.S.–Canada relationship remains one of the most successful partnerships globally. 



He also highlighted Canada's role as a "safe, secure, reliable partner" for critical U.S. imports like steel, aluminum, and energy.



Trudeau cautioned that if the U.S. turns away from Canada, it may have to source resources from adversarial nations like Russia, China, or Venezuela.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Currencies Plunge As Trade Risks Mount</h3>



The Mexican peso weakened 1.2% in the session, with the USD/MXN exchange rate rising to 20.72. The peso has now lost 4% of its value against the dollar since Trump's election victory in November 2024.



The Canadian dollar also struggled, falling 0.7% in its worst daily performance in over a month. The USD/CAD exchange rate reached 1.44 levels, with the currency similarly down about 4% since November.



Despite the currency weakness, equity markets in both countries saw gains. The iShares MSCI Canada Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWC#NYSE">EWC</a>) rose 1.1%, while the iShares MSCI Mexico ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWW#NYSE">EWW</a>) climbed 1.9%.

Mexican Peso, Canadian Dollar Slide As Trump Threatens 25% Tariffs, Economist Eyes Price Hikes On 'Typical US Breakfast'

With Jerome Powell keeping his cards close to the chest, investors hoping for a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">quick rate cut</a> might need to sit tight. 



Inflation has now regained equal footing with labor market data in the Fed's policy calculus, and according to Kevin Flanagan, Head of Fixed Income Strategy at WisdomTree Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WT#NYSE">WT</a>), the latest numbers simply don't "rise to the threshold" for an early rate cut.



While the central bank would love to get back to neutral, Powell is in no rush. 



"Powell &amp; Co. will wait to see future employment and inflation reports to see if the window ‘re-opens' for another cut come the March FOMC meeting, at the earliest," Flanagan said in an exclusive interview with Benzinga.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Investment Strategy: How To Navigate Market Uncertainty</h2>



Volatility in the bond market is here to stay, making traditional fixed-income strategies look increasingly shaky. 



Flanagan warns that duration risk can amplify price swings, leaving investors exposed if they're too far out on the yield curve. His advice? A <a href="https://www.wisdomtree.com/investments/strategies/fixed-income">barbell approach</a> that blends short-duration and long-duration assets to navigate the turbulence. "Utilizing a barbell strategy with an active-passive approach is our recommendation," Flanagan states.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where's The Yield Curve Headed?</h2>



Looking ahead, the Treasury yield curve is likely to steepen further over the next six to twelve months, with intermediate to long-term bonds expected to underperform their short-term counterparts. 



"The Treasury yield curve will more than likely continue to steepen over the course of the next 6-12 months," Flanagan notes. Managing both volatility and duration will be key, and investors need to be tactical to avoid getting caught on the wrong side of the rate cycle.



With the Fed playing the waiting game and bond market uncertainty persisting, investors would do well to adapt. Staying nimble and strategic might be the only way to win in this new fixed-income reality.

JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee sees currency woes, China struggles, and lukewarm AI adoption as hurdles for the tech giant's upcoming earnings—and warns that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/AAPL/guidance">guidance could disappoint investors</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">China's Chilling Effect</h2>



Apple's grip on China is loosening, and Chatterjee isn't mincing words. "Share loss in China to likely continue with the company already past its product cycle peak and with the consumer subsidies from the local administration to enable smartphone replacement for low to mid-tier phones, which excludes high-end smartphones." 



With Beijing's push to boost domestic brands, Apple is losing its competitive edge in a critical growth market.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">AI: The Game-Changer That Isn't (Yet)</h2>



Despite Apple's push into Edge AI, Chatterjee sees a slow build rather than a sudden spike in demand. "Limited traction yet for the AI features rolled out increasing the likelihood of flattish unit sales as we go through the upcoming quarters, although downside to unit sales remain limited given trough replacement rates already." 



Simply put, consumers aren't rushing to upgrade just for AI, leaving iPhone sales stuck in neutral.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strong Dollar, Weak Outlook?</h2>



The dollar's strength is another thorn in Apple's side, making overseas sales less profitable. "Stronger USD to increase headwinds for Apple to navigate in the coming quarters, given limited appetite to adjust pricing outside of new product launches." 



This could mean Apple absorbs the hit rather than passing costs to customers, squeezing margins further.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Apple Earnings Outlook: A Tough Climb</h2>



Chatterjee expects Apple's first quarter earnings to come in at $2.33 per share on $123 billion in revenue—just shy of consensus estimates. But it's the guidance that could really spook investors. Revenue for the quarter is expected to land at $94.8 billion, trailing consensus expectations, as China's smartphone subsidies and AI's slow ramp-up weigh on demand.



Still, Chatterjee isn't ditching Apple altogether. He maintains an Overweight rating, banking on Apple's premium valuation holding up thanks to its ecosystem and AI ambitions. 



However, he trims his December 2025 price target from $265 to $260, warning that earnings revisions from a softer guide could pressure shares in the near term.



Apple may have long-term AI potential, but for now, it's a battle of innovation versus macro headwinds. And according to Chatterjee, the next earnings report could be a reality check for investors.

Apple's AI Advances Can't Offset Chinese Market Slowdown, Says Analyst

Donald Trump wasted no time in his return to the White House, signing a flurry of executive orders, and, most notably, declaring <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/01/43086509/trump-unleashes-executive-orders-on-border-security-oil-drilling-domestic-manufacturing-in-first-acts-as-president">a national energy emergency. </a>



During his inauguration speech on Monday, he reaffirmed his commitment to fossil fuels, pledging to &#8220;drill, baby, drill&#8221; and revoke the electric vehicle mandate. 



&#8220;The inflation crisis was caused by massive overspending and escalating energy prices. And that is why today I will also declare a national energy emergency. We will drill, baby, drill,&#8221; Trump said. 



Trump also announced his intent to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord, calling wind turbines "ugly" and reiterating his policy against renewable energy expansion. His focus is clear: expand drilling, restore the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and flood global markets with U.S. oil and gas.



Oil markets are already reacting, but will this push for American energy dominance send crude prices soaring or lead to an oversupply crisis?



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Happens To Oil Prices?</h3>



The immediate impact of Trump's pro-drilling stance on oil markets has been strong, with traders already reassessing their outlooks on crude prices. 



The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude – as tracked by the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>) – tumbled by 2.6% during morning trading on Tuesday, heading for a third straight session of losses. 



"Mr. Trump's full-throated yell for U.S. producers to: ‘Drill, baby, drill!' is not new. And it's perfectly logical that prices should fall at the prospect of increased supply. But producers are highly price-sensitive, and there comes a time/price where it's uneconomical to raise production," commented David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation.



&#8220;Day 1 executive orders in these areas are expected to be followed by further action in the coming days and weeks, with Trump set to test the limits of presidential authority to pursue an agenda that aims to unravel Biden's energy and climate policies,&#8221; wrote Energy Intelligence in a note Tuesday. 



David Goldman, head of trading at Novion said Trump's policy shift "is unlikely to have any significant impact in the short term but may have bearish repercussions in the long term."



Goldman highlighted that a sharp increase in U.S. production, particularly if global demand slows due to the ongoing transition to renewable energy, could weigh on prices. "Increased production without sufficient export infrastructure risks bottlenecks, while protectionist trade measures could stifle international cooperation and reduce market efficiency."



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Energy Stocks See A Small Lift</h3>



Oil and gas stocks saw modest gains in premarket trading Tuesday as investors weighed the potential for increased drilling activity. 



The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>), which tracks major oil companies, was up 0.1% during premarket trading, while the SPDR S&amp;P Oil &amp; Gas Exploration &amp; Production ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOP#NYSE">XOP</a>) saw similar gains.



Among individual stocks:

Trump's 'Drill, Baby, Drill' Era Begins: Oil Prices Tumble, US Energy Stocks Edge Up

3M Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MMM#NYSE">MMM</a>) stock surged after the company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter 2024 results and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/n43092130/3m-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2024-results-initiates-full-year-2025-financial-guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">initiated 2025 guidance.</a>



The company reported net sales of $6.01 billion, a slight increase of 0.13% year-over-year. Adjusted net sales totaled $5.808 billion, up 2.2% YoY, beating the consensus of $5.781 billion.



Adjusted EPS was $1.68, down 2% YoY, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beating the consensus of $1.66.</a>



Adjusted organic sales growth for the quarter was 2.1%, reflecting a 70-basis-point headwind due to product portfolio optimization initiatives and the exit from certain smaller markets.



GAAP operating income margin expanded to 18.1% from 15% a year-ago. Adjusted operating margin contracted 17 bps points to 19.7%, with adjusted business segment operating income of $1.14 billion (+1.3% YoY).



Safety &amp; Industrial reported 2.4% adjusted organic growth and adjusted operating margin expansion to 21% from 19.7% in the prior year quarter.



Transportation &amp; Electronics reported 2% adjusted organic growth, and the adjusted operating margin contracted to 19.4% from 20.9% a year ago. The consumer segment reported adjusted organic growth of 1.2%.



Operating cash flow for full-year 2024 stood at $1.8 billion, down from $6.68 billion. MMM returned $3.8 billion to shareholders via dividends and share repurchases.



Operating cash flow included $3.8 billion in net after-tax payments for significant litigation costs, primarily associated with Public Water Systems and Combat Arms Earplugs.



2025 Guidance: 3M anticipates adjusted total sales growth of 0.5% to 1.5%, driven by adjusted organic sales <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">growth of 2% to 3%.</a>



The company projects adjusted EPS in the range of $7.60 to $7.90 versus consensus of $7.78 and expects adjusted operating cash flow between $5.2 billion and $5.3 billion, resulting in approximately 100% adjusted free cash flow conversion.



Price Action: MMM shares are trading higher by 4.23% at $147 premarket on the last check Tuesday.

U.S. stocks could open on a positive note on Tuesday after <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/01/43085323/trump-sworn-in-as-47th-president-declares-golden-age-of-america-begins-right-now">Donald Trump's inauguration</a> as the 47th President of the U.S. on Monday.



Futures point to a positive start to the Trump presidency amid a cloud of tariff threats against other countries and a slew of executive orders. These include Trump revoking President Biden's EV mandate, refocusing on energy, and ordering the government's employee base to be reduced.

Crude oil prices edged lower as traders await clarity about the new Trump administration's agenda.



Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) and Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) were among the top gainers on Friday, surging 3% during the session.



On the economic data front, U.S. industrial production rose by 0.9% in December, topping market estimates of a 0.3% increase. Housing starts rose by 15.8% from the previous month to an annualized rate of 1.499 million units in December.



Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a positive note, with consumer discretionary, information technology, and communication services stocks recording gains on Friday.



However, healthcare and real estate stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session lower.

Insights From Analysts:



Analysts at JPMorgan sounded optimistic about the earnings growth prospects of U.S. companies over their European rivals, but the reason for this is slightly different.



According to JPMorgan strategist Mislav Matejka, the optimism stems from the fact that projections for the U.S. benchmark were "meaningfully" reduced despite a strong economy, according <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-20/jpmorgan-s-matejka-sees-us-profits-outshining-europe-this-season">to</a> a report by Bloomberg.



On the other hand, expectations were "more punchy" for European stocks, which could be challenging for companies to meet.
