As adult-use cannabis markets gain traction across the U.S., medical marijuana — a cornerstone of early cannabis reform — seems to be losing its place in policy discussions. 
Despite its importance, the focus on adult-use legalization has overshadowed the medical marijuana conversation, raising concerns within the industry.
Brandon Harshbarger, president of Cheech and Chong Global Holdings, discussed this shift in an interview before his appearance at the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/events/cannabis-conference/">Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference</a>.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Medical Cannabis: The Forgotten Pillar</h1>
Harshbarger emphasized the centrality of medical marijuana in the initial stages of cannabis reform. 
&#8220;One of the things I hold most dear to my heart, and it is part of the ethos of this company, is that cannabis is medicine,&#8221; he stated. However, as recreational cannabis markets expanded, the focus on medical use diminished.
He attributed this shift, in part, to regulatory challenges posed by the FDA regarding health claims surrounding cannabis. But more importantly, he pointed to a growing market demand for casual cannabis consumption, which he believes has driven the industry's current trajectory.
&#8220;Unfortunately, when recreational programs started to take off, part of that strategy meant a reduction in emphasis on the medicinal qualities of cannabis,&#8221; Harshbarger noted. The increased access brought about by recreational markets, he explained, has made it easier for consumers to view cannabis in a more casual light, which in turn has fueled the industry's growth.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Balancing Access with Mission</h1>
While the industry has moved toward adult use, Harshbarger remains committed to expanding access for all medical or recreational consumers. &#8220;Our mission in cannabis is simple: access for everyone, in every market,&#8221; he said. He acknowledged that the evolution of the cannabis industry has allowed for greater availability of cannabis products. Still, he expressed concern that this shift has led to losing focus on the medical benefits that initially sparked legalization efforts.
&#8220;In some markets, that is medicinal, but in others, hemp-derived products have shown that when access to cannabis occurs at scale, the benefits are even greater than we could have ever imagined,&#8221; Harshbarger added, underscoring the potential of cannabis across all markets and forms.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Road Ahead</h1>
As cannabis policy continues to evolve, Harshbarger remains hopeful that medical marijuana will regain its prominence in policy discussions. He believes that while adult-use markets are essential for industry growth, the medical cannabis community should not be forgotten. 
For Harshbarger, the future of cannabis lies in balancing both markets, ensuring that all consumers, whether casual or medical, have access to the products they need.

The Details: According to the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/spirit-airlines-in-talks-with-bondholders-over-terms-of-potential-bankruptcy-filing-fdd23fae">Wall Street Journal</a>, Spirit has been in talks with bondholders and creditors regarding support for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
This comes after a federal district court judge blocked the company&#8217;s merger with JetBlue back in January. The two airlines have abandoned the potential merger, citing that they likely could not overcome legal and regulatory challenges.
Following the ruling, Spirit has begun shrinking its operations, cutting dozens of routes for November and December. Also, the airline plans to shrink its capacity by almost 20% during the fourth quarter.
Spirit has reported losses in almost every quarter since February 2020, per data from<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pro/"> Benzinga Pro</a>. For the 2024 fiscal-year second quarter, the company reported an adjusted net loss of $157.9 million.

NHS England has proposed a phased rollout of tirzepatide, a promising weight-loss drug, to benefit patients most likely to achieve significant clinical outcomes.
Tirzepatide, branded as Mounjaro and produced by Eli Lilly And Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>), has shown remarkable results in clinical trials. It offers greater weight loss than existing therapies like Novo Nordisk A/S&#8217; (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVO#NYSE">NVO</a>) and Ozempic (semaglutide).
In the SURMOUNT-4 trial, patients lost an average of 20.9% of their body weight in 36 weeks.

The plan, currently under consultation, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nice.org.uk/news/articles/consultation-on-nhs-england-proposals-for-a-phased-launch-of-obesity-injection" rel="noreferrer noopener">aims</a> to test various medication delivery models before expanding its availability.
Under draft guidance from an independent committee at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), tirzepatide has been recommended for patients living with obesity, with a maximum list price of 122 pounds ($159.6) per month for the highest dose.
The phased launch will integrate tirzepatide into community-based services and digital health platforms to expand accessibility.
The rollout will target up to 240,000 people in the first three years and evaluate cost-effective delivery models, including virtual clinics.
Eligible patients will be categorized based on their BMI and related health conditions. Initially, those with a BMI above 40 and three or more weight-related conditions, such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease, will qualify.
Obesity is a significant challenge for the NHS, with annual treatment costs reaching 11.4 billion pounds ($14.91 billion).
According to the Health Survey for England 2022, about 64% of adults in the country are overweight or obese.
The consultation period for the rollout plan is currently open, with final guidance from NICE expected later this year.
Earlier this week, Eli Lilly announced a&nbsp;$4.5 billion&nbsp;investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing&nbsp;and drug development, as the company inches closer to becoming the first pharma company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/10/41141028/eli-lilly-invests-4-5b-in-new-medicine-foundry-for-advanced-drug-manufacturing-to-push-us-pharma-" rel="noreferrer noopener">in the $1 trillion club</a>.

The company said it plans to reinvest this capital into the construction of the 20 MW CB-1 facility at Lake Mariner.&nbsp;

According to new research, almost half American households, about 45%, are expected to run out of money in retirement if they <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/09/40964924/most-people-expect-to-retire-at-67-but-56-retire-sooner-can-you-guess-the-actual-average-retirem">stop working at 65</a>. This raises some serious red flags, especially as more people live longer and rely on their savings to fund retirement.
The study, conducted by the Morningstar Center for Retirement &amp; Policy Studies, used a new simulation tool to evaluate retirement readiness. The tool factors in individual traits, health care expenses and life expectancy.

Single women are at an even higher risk, with 55% likely to run out of money, compared to 41% of couples and 40% of single men.
Not all groups are equally affected. The study found that 61% of Hispanic Americans and 59% of non-Hispanic Black Americans face a high risk of financial shortfall, compared to about 40% of non-Hispanic white Americans.&nbsp;
One major reason is the lack of access to employer-sponsored retirement plans like 401(k)s. About 56% of American workers, totaling 69 million people, don't have access to any retirement plan through their employer, which puts them at a significant disadvantage.

According to a Clever survey, two-thirds of retirees believe the country is in a retirement crisis and 40% worry about outliving their savings. Retired women are particularly vulnerable, with 28% having no savings compared to 20% of men. Many retired women also report having saved less due to lower earnings during their working years, leading to more financial insecurity in retirement.
Retirement timing also plays a crucial role. Retiring earlier increases the risk of running out of money. If Americans retire at 62, the earliest they can claim Social Security, about 54% could face a financial shortfall, whereas <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/05/39064579/suze-orman-says-70-is-the-new-retirement-age-but-is-she-right">delaying retirement until 70</a> reduces the risk significantly to 28%. Improving retirement security starts with making the most of employer-sponsored retirement plans, like 401(k)s. If you have access to one, contribute as much as possible, especially to get matching funds from your employer. And whatever you do, avoid dipping into it early. Early withdrawals can seriously disrupt your long-term savings.
There's also growing support for expanding access to pensions. In fact, 83% of Americans believe every worker should have a pension to ensure financial independence in retirement. People want more stability and pensions offer that kind of security that 401(k)s alone might not provide.

The HSBC India services PMI was revised downward to 57.7 in September versus a preliminary reading of 58.9. The S&amp;P Global Hong Kong SAR PMI surged to 50.0 in September compared to August's reading of 49.4.
