<p><strong>Mellody Hobson</strong>, a prominent U.S. financier, is<a href="https://about.starbucks.com/stories/2025/gratitude-and-appreciation-to-mellody-hobson-as-she-steps-down-from-the-starbucks-board/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> stepping down</a> from the board of Starbucks after a distinguished two-decade tenure.</p>
<p>Hobson will not stand for reelection at the company&#8217;s 2025 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.</p>
<p>Hobson, who joined the board at the invitation of former CEO <strong>Howard Schultz</strong>, played a significant role in guiding the company through pivotal moments.</p>
<p>In her resignation <a target="_blank" href="https://about.starbucks.com/uploads/2025/01/Mellody-Hobson-Letter.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">letter</a> to Starbucks' Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Brad Lerman, Hobson expressed her deep gratitude for her time at the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;I want to offer a special thanks to Howard who taught me so much in all the years I sat right next to him at virtually every board meeting,&#8221; Hobson writes.</p>

<p>With <strong>Brian Niccol </strong>now leading Starbucks, Hobson feels confident in stepping away, trusting the company's future under his guidance.</p>
<p>&#8220;I now feel comfortable stepping away from the board and do not plan to stand for re-election. I believe it is important for Brian to have a lead director who can sit alongside him for years to come—my twenty years is already a long time,&#8221; Hobson writes in the letter.</p>
<p>Hobson emphasized her belief in Starbucks&#8217; long-term potential, praising the company&#8217;s commitment to its employees, customers, and stakeholders.</p>
<p>Hobson remains a dedicated investor in Starbucks, maintaining her love for the brand and its ongoing success.</p>

<p>Major U.S. indices moved higher in early trading as Treasury yields stalled, giving traders space to reassess interest rate expectations ahead of Wednesday&#8217;s pivotal consumer inflation report.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Softer Producer Inflation Provides Market Oxygen</h3>
<p>In December 2024, the Producer Price Index rose 3.3% year-over-year, slightly below forecasts of 3.4%. Core producer inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, remained steady at 3.5% annually, but monthly core prices flattened, reflecting softer price pressures across underlying components.</p>

<p>The major indices all traded in the green, with the Nasdaq 100 leading the charge. Notably, every S&amp;P 500 sector posted gains, underscoring broad-based strength across the market.</p>
<p>On the economic front, the latest ISM Manufacturing PMI exceeded expectations, signaling a healthier-than-anticipated manufacturing sector in December. This marked the second consecutive month of expansion. </p>
<p>Treasury yields edged higher, with the 30-year yield ticking up to 4.80%. Richmond Fed President <strong>Thomas Barkin</strong> hinted at a hawkish tone during his speech at the Maryland Bankers Association, highlighting the need to keep restrictive monetary policy to counter persistent inflation risks.</p>

Leading And Lagging Sectors For January 3, 2025

<p>Wall Street began the new year with modest gains, as major U.S. indices edged higher by midday trading in New York, aiming to recover from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">the prior session&#8217;s selloff.</a></p>
<p>The S&amp;P 500 advanced 0.5%, while the tech-focused Nasdaq 100 rose 0.6%. Small-cap stocks led the charge, with the Russell 2000 climbing nearly 1%.</p>
<p>Energy-related stocks outperformed, buoyed by a surge in oil and natural gas prices. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil soared 2.4% to surpass $73 per barrel, marking its fourth consecutive session of gains. The rally followed Energy Information Administration (EIA) data showing a sixth straight weekly decline in U.S. commercial crude inventories.</p>
<p>Natural gas prices also gained over 2%, driven by heightened heating demand as arctic <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/01/42769181/natural-gas-prices-surge-as-arctic-blast-freezes-us-3-stocks-on-the-move">air swept across the U.S.</a></p>
<p>The broader commodities market was upbeat as well. Gold climbed 1.7%, and silver surged 2.4%. Longer-dated U.S. Treasury yields stayed high, with the 30-year Treasury note inching up 2 basis points to 4.80%.</p>
<p>Tesla was in the spotlight for disappointing results. The EV giant reported delivering 1.79 million vehicles in 2024, falling 1.1% short of its 2023 total of 1.81 million. Shares tumbled by over 5%, poised for the fifth straight session decline. </p>
<p>In cryptocurrency markets, <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) sharply rebounded, jumping 2.9% to $97,000 and eyeing its third straight daily surge. </p>

<li><strong>Unity Software Inc.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/U#NYSE">U</a>) saw its shares climb Thursday morning after investor Keith Gill, known as &#8220;Roaring Kitty,&#8221; made a cryptic social media post late Wednesday, as reported by media outlets. Unity&#8217;s stock surged 8%.</li>
