The company's live-action "How to Train Your Dragon" film is already setting franchise records.
What Happened: While not all<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44465410/snow-white-disappoints-at-box-office-will-remake-hurt-disneys-marvel-magic-in-2025"> </a><a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44465410/snow-white-disappoints-at-box-office-will-remake-hurt-disneys-marvel-magic-in-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">live-action remakes </a>of animated films are hits for Disney, Comcast's Dreamworks Animation segment has an early hit with "How to Train Your Dragon."
The film grossed $83.7 million domestically in its opening weekend and has a total worldwide gross of $197.8 million, as reported by <a href="https://deadline.com/2025/06/box-office-how-to-train-your-dragon-1236432834/">Deadline</a>. This total is the best domestic opening weekend for the franchise, breaking the totals of the previous three animated hits.

The latest film opening is significantly higher than any of the animated films and gave movie theaters a strong Father's Day weekend total of $155 million. The total was down from last year's $214 million, helped by "Inside Out 2," but ahead of a pre-COVID 2019 total of $135.9 million.
While the film&#8217;s success doesn't mean we'll get live-action "Shrek" or "Kung Fu Panda" movies anytime soon, it does mean that Comcast has another extension of one of its strong Dreamworks Animation franchises. The studio is already working on a sequel to the live-action film, which will be released on June 11, 2027.
Strong demand for the film's trailers, which had three-quarters of a billion views before the release, helped. The movie studio also worked on several promotional campaigns, including with Roblox, Burger King, WWE, the NBA, and the NHL.
A "How to Train Your Dragon"-themed game within Roblox has had over 10 million plays and is on pace to be Universal&#8217;s most-played Roblox integration.

Why It's Important: The success of "How to Train Your Dragon" could have reciprocal effects on the company's streaming platform that will land the film in the future and the company's theme parks division with a new Epic Universe park in Florida featuring the franchise in several immersive worlds.
It also sets Comcast up for a strong 2025 box office showing with another top hit. The movie is already ranked 12th domestically for year-to-date box office. Comcast's only current top-10 film is "Dog Man," which had $98.0 million in domestic box office and will likely fall from the top 10 soon.
Comcast had four top-ten films domestically last year and ranked second by studios at $1.74, trailing only Disney.
The company's upcoming film slate includes a couple of Dreamworks Animation with "The Bad Guys 2" in August and "Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie" in September.
Comcast also has several upcoming blockbusters including July's "Jurassic World Rebirth" and November's "Wicked: For Good."
Last year's "Wicked" ranked third domestically and was one of the top-grossing films worldwide for the year. The last Jurassic World franchise movie came out in 2022 and grossed $376.9 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide.
A continued strong showing by "How to Train Your Dragon" could help pad Comcast's box office total as it heads into the release of other highly anticipated films in 2025.
CMCSA Price Action: Comcast stock traded at $34.98 on Monday, compared to a 52-week trading range of $31.44 to $45.31. Comcast stock is down 6.5% year-to-date in 2025.

Live Action 'How To Train Your Dragon' Box Office Soars Above Cartoon Films: Inside Comcast's 2025 Movie Magic

Bankers say these biscuits are worth billions. The $1.5 billion asking price for Bojangles, the fried chicken and biscuit fast-food chain, is about triple what private equity firms Durational Capital Management and TJC paid in 2019—just four years after <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/15/05/5492635/bojangles-prices-ipo-at-19-high-end-of-range">the chain went public</a>.
According <a href="https://www.wsj.com/business/deals/bojangles-is-exploring-a-sale-while-the-fried-chicken-market-is-hot-5cc6fb9e?mod=e2tw">to</a> the Wall Street Journal, both strategic restaurant operators and private equity buyers are interested.
The North Carolina–based fast-casual brand has been expanding thanks to U.S. chicken chain sales spiking 9% last year. 
The potential sale comes amid a broader M&amp;A wave in the restaurant industry. According to Variety, Disney managed to haggle the price down. Instead of shelling out the full $27.5 billion valuation Comcast wanted, Disney — which had about $5.852 billion in cash on hand for the quarter ending March 31 — will pay about $9 billion for the stake. This includes an extra $438.7 million recently agreed upon after arbitration.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bankruptcy Block</h3>

The firm, burdened with nearly $5 billion in debt, was also hurt by the prolonged semiconductor shortage. Despite the filing, Marelli plans to continue operating under a restructuring deal backed by over $1 billion in new financing.</li>

<li>Sunnova Energy International Inc. Judge Alfredo Perez approved an initial $15 million draw, with the rest pending future approval. Earlier this week, a Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-03-19/oaktree-buys-up-position-in-sunnova-debt-ahead-of-talks">report</a> suggested Oaktree Capital Management has been <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44423358/sunnova-energy-nova-stock-is-volatile-whats-going-on">buying up debt in the company</a>.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Benzinga: Where do you think the most consolidation is going to happen this year and next?</h3>
Lloyd: It&#8217;s going to be where all the money&#8217;s at. It&#8217;s going to be big tech. Take Apple (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Microsoft (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>), Alphabet (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>), Amazon (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and add up all their cash accounts. If these tech giants are collecting 5% of their cash on interest, and interest rates drop at all, they will go out there and buy everything they can buy. I also think the most divesting will also happen in tech. These big corporations are too inefficient. They&#8217;re too big. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">BZ: What should they do?</h3>
Lloyd: The most efficient way is to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/18/02/11119830/6-analysts-react-to-the-paypal-ebay-split">do something like</a> eBay (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EBAY#NASDAQ">EBAY</a>) and PayPal (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PYPL#NASDAQ">PYPL</a>) did. There are all these ways you can break up your company and actually make more money and add more shareholder value. These guys can write $2 billion checks to these small, mid-cap companies and not even feel a single thing. They&#8217;re making more on their interest, on their cash accounts, than they are writing those checks. Divesting the big parts of tech will also happen, probably in the next couple of years. I&#8217;m not saying it will happen this year, but in the next couple of years — I talked about this on Fox Business, probably six months ago — Apple will get broken up to focus on growth areas, like AI. Apple is behind the eight-ball with AI compared to others. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">BZ: That&#8217;s something that Senator Bernie Sanders would like to <a href="https://www.politico.com/story/2019/07/16/bernie-sanders-facebook-google-amazon-1416786">hear</a>.</h3>
Lloyd: I&#8217;m not saying the government&#8217;s going to do it. I&#8217;m saying I think it&#8217;s in the company&#8217;s best interest. Corporations themselves should want to break up in some ways because they make more money and become more efficient. If they can lean up certain sectors and areas, they can actually be able to deliver more shareholder value.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">BZ: We&#8217;re not hearing much of that conversation from big tech.</h3>
Lloyd: I&#8217;m not either. I just hope it happens to add more shareholder value. I think they&#8217;re too fat and fluffy, and I think that it&#8217;s definitely possible and something that could happen that I&#8217;m keeping an eye on.

Deal Dispatch: Chicken Chains, Solar Pains And Disney's Hulu Gains — Plus, Why Big Tech Should Break Up

The new generative AI offerings of Adobe Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ADBE#NASDAQ">ADBE</a>) are finding a lot of takers among enterprise customers, who prioritize intellectual property safety.
What Happened: During the company&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/06/45915038/adobe-q2-earnings-revenue-beat-eps-beat-raised-fy-guidance-continued-investments-in-ai-innovation">second quarter results</a> on Thursday, Adobe&#8217;s President of Digital Media, David Wadhwani, highlighted that customers are choosing Firefly not just for its creative capabilities, but because of the legal safeguards built into the product.
&#8220;We have trained our Firefly models, as many of you know, on stock and other content that we have access to,&#8221; he said, adding that the company has a &#8220;contributor fund&#8221; that pays out to creators of stock and other content used in its models, thus sidestepping the IP risks that other generative AI models face.
According to Wadhwani, the strategy is resonating well in boardrooms, with a lot of companies selecting Adobe&#8217;s Firefly generative AI solution because of the &#8220;safety of it.&#8221;

While the company didn&#8217;t explicitly link any new customer wins to this strategy, it did highlight a string of high-profile enterprise adoptions tied to its Firefly and GenStudio platforms during the quarter.
&#8220;Select key global customer wins include Cisco, County of Los Angeles, the Defense Information Systems Agency, Macy's [and] Ulta Beauty," the company said, also noting that &#8220;top sports leagues like MLB, the NFL, and Premier League&#8221; had joined its growing roster of clients.
Emphasizing the need for IP-safe tools in enterprise content creation, the company&#8217;s CEO, Shantanu Narayen, said, &#8220;You're not going to use something that's not been designed to be intellectually… yeah, the intellectual property being correct. For production.&#8221;
Why It Matters: This comes amid growing concerns of copyright infringement by generative AI tools such as Midjourney and OpenAI. 
Early this week, the Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) and Comcast Corp.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) Universal Studios <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/legal/25/06/45895643/disney-universal-studios-sue-ai-image-generator-midjourney-for-copyright-infringement">filed a lawsuit</a> against MidJourney, calling the platform a &#8220;bottomless pit of plagiarism.&#8221;
Several other GenAI platforms have faced <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/12/36432485/new-york-times-sues-openai-and-microsoft-ai-copyright-infringement-amid-54-stock-surge">threats of lawsuits</a> in recent years, including OpenAI and Microsoft, from the New York Times Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NYT#NYSE">NYT</a>) and Rupert Murdoch&#8217;s Dow Jones and New York Post, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41442679/rupert-murdochs-dow-jones-new-york-post-sue-jeff-bezos-backed-perplexity-for-copyright-infringement">initiating proceedings against</a> the Jeff Bezos-backed Perplexity AI. 
During its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/06/45915038/adobe-q2-earnings-revenue-beat-eps-beat-raised-fy-guidance-continued-investments-in-ai-innovation">second quarter results</a> on Thursday, Adobe reported $5.87 billion in revenue, ahead of consensus estimates at $5.79 billion. Profits stood at $5.06 per share, beating estimates of $4.96 per share.
Price Action: Adobe&#8217;s shares were up 0.20% on Thursday, ending the day at $413.68, but are down 2.10% after hours, following its second quarter earnings.

Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) and Comcast Corp.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) Universal Studios on Wednesday filed a copyright lawsuit against Midjourney, an AI-powered <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/08/40500831/midjourney-opens-web-experience-to-all-amid-controversy-over-unauthorized-use-of-artists-work">image generation service. </a>
What Happened: The companies submitted the lawsuit in a federal court in Los Angeles and accused Midjourney of unauthorized use and distribution of the studios' most famous characters, according to a Reuters report. 
The lawsuit called Midjourney&#8217;s platform a "bottomless pit of plagiarism."

The companies alleged that Midjourney unlawfully copied and distributed countless images featuring characters such as Darth Vader from "Star Wars," Elsa from "Frozen" and the Minions from "Despicable Me," among others.
Disney and Universal claimed they had previously asked Midjourney to stop infringing on their copyrighted works or, at least, to implement technical measures to prevent such use, but the company reportedly ignored these requests. 
Instead, the studios argued, Midjourney continued to release improved versions of its service, resulting in higher-quality infringing images. The lawsuit was filed by seven corporate entities representing the Disney and Universal film units that owned or managed the copyrights for these characters.
Disney and Universal are seeking a preliminary injunction to block Midjourney from copying their works or offering its image and video generation services without protections against copyright infringement. The studios are also pursuing unspecified damages.

Why It Matters: Midjourney was also named in a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/24/02/37398914/the-4-700-artist-ai-controversy-artists-accuse-midjourney-and-other-ai-firms-of-unauthorized-use-in">separate 2023 lawsuit</a>, which remains ongoing.
The suit claimed several AI image generators, including Midjourney, had used the works of over 4,700 artists, including well-known names such as Norman Rockwell and Wes Anderson, to train their systems without consent or compensation.
The controversy gained traction after artist Jon Lam shared the "Midjourney Style List" on social media, sparking debate about the lack of regulation in the AI-generated art space. 
The list, reportedly disclosed by Midjourney's founder in a public forum, fueled artists' frustrations over being excluded from the profits made by AI platforms that monetize their styles through subscription services.

Disney, Universal Studios Sue AI-Image Generator Midjourney For Copyright Infringement

Scottie Scheffler has taken the golf world by storm <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports-betting/24/07/39940590/scottie-scheffler-gold-medalist-golfer-looks-to-turn-2024-pga-tour-success-into-a-2024-oly">in recent years</a> and enters the 2025 US Open as the heavy betting favorite. The golfer shared a unique story about his Venmo account ahead of the tournament.
What Happened: Scheffler has made bettors <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/04/26569375/scottie-scheffler-wins-the-masters-how-much-a-100-bet-on-the-golfer-paid-out-and-how-one-bettor-made">plenty of money</a> in recent years with his top form on the golf course, which includes several major tournament wins.
Those who bet on Scheffler are also the reason why the golfer no longer has a Venmo account, the financial app to send money to other people owned by PayPal Holdings (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PYPL#NASDAQ">PYPL</a>).
When asked about being the betting favorite for this year's U.S. Open, June 12-15 at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, Scheffler got real with the difference between him and fan expectations.
"I think everybody hears from fans whether they have a financial benefit. That's why I had to get rid of my Venmo," Scheffler <a href="https://x.com/GolfDigest/status/1932550169527984156">said</a>, as shared by Golf Digest.
Scheffler said that it wasn't a good feeling after he lost to get requests from fans.
"I was either getting paid by people or people were requesting a bunch of money when I didn't win."
Scheffler said he received a "couple of bucks" here and there when he would win, but the requests would always outnumber the payments when he was on the losing end.
The golfer said he doesn't pay attention to betting odds and starting Thursday, all the golfers in the U.S. Open are at par and playing against the golf course.

Betting Odds: The U.S. Open kicks off Thursday and coverage will be provided by Comcast Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) via television on USA and NBC and streaming on Peacock. Thursday's opening round kicks off at 6:30 a.m. ET and goes to 8 p.m. ET with Sunday's coverage going from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET.
Scheffler begins his round Thursday at 1:25 p.m. ET.
At sportsbook DraftKings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DKNG#NASDAQ">DKNG</a>), Scheffler is the betting favorite at +275, significantly ahead of Bryson DeChambeau (+75O), Jon Rahm (+1,200) and Rory McIlroy (+1,200), who round out the top four picks.
According to <a href="https://x.com/DavidPurdum/status/1932817555623719110">ESPN</a>, there have been more bets on Scheffler winning than all other golfers combined at ESPN Bet, which is operated by PENN Entertainment (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PENN#NASDAQ">PENN</a>).
Scheffler, being a heavy favorite, puts him in similar company to Tiger Woods. The golfer has been the favorite or co-favorite for 11 consecutive major golf tournaments, which is the third-largest streak in the past 40 years as <a href="https://www.actionnetwork.com/golf/tiger-territory-scottie-schefflers-historic-odds-at-2025-u-s-open">reported </a>by Action Network. Scheffler trails only two streaks by Woods for the longest streak.
Scheffler has had odds of +275 or lower five times and won two of those five tournaments.
On the current PGA Tour <a href="https://www.pgatour.com/player/46046/scottie-scheffler/results">season</a>, Scheffler has three wins from 12 events, nine top 10 finishes, 12 top 25 finishes and made the cut in all 12 tournaments.

Scottie Scheffler Is The US Open Betting Favorite: Just Don't Ask Him For A Refund On Venmo If He Loses

President Donald Trump's upcoming birthday bash comes with tanks, troops—<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">and no primetime</a>.
What Happened: A $45-million military parade in Washington D.C. to celebrate <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45184301/us-armys-250th-anniversary-parade-to-coincide-with-trumps-79th-birthday">the Army's 250th anniversary</a>—and Trump's 79th birthday on June 14—won't air on any major broadcast networks, as top media outlets prioritize sports and streaming.
Unlike events like <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/25/01/43139381/how-many-people-watched-donald-trumps-2025-inauguration-spoiler-less-than-biden-four-years-ago">Trump&#8217;s inauguration in January</a>, the president's military parade will be relegated to streaming platforms and off-broadcast television for major media networks.
ABC News, which is a unit of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>), will cover the parade on its ABC News Live streaming platform Saturday, Variety <a href="https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/trump-military-parade-tv-news-coverage-cbs-nbc-abc-1236425125/">reported</a>.
Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) will utilize its NBC News Now streaming outlet to cover the event instead of its NBC broadcast channel.
Paramount Global (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARA#NASDAQ">PARA</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARAA#NASDAQ">PARAA</a>) will cover the event on its CBS News 24/7 streaming network.
Fox Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOX#NASDAQ">FOX</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOXA#NASDAQ">FOXA</a>) will also keep coverage off its FOX channel. Instead, it will utilize the right-leaning Fox News Channel, which will have four hours of special coverage from 6 p.m. ET to 10 p.m. ET.
Many media companies are choosing to air regularly scheduled programming over the parade.
Disney's ABC broadcast channel has the UFL Championship game Saturday night during the parade window. Comcast's NBC has US Open Golf coverage. CBS plans to air local programming, evening news and regularly scheduled programming. FOX has Major League Baseball coverage.
Along with the broadcast television sports coverage, there will also be Game 5 of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/sports/25/06/45783102/canadas-32-year-stanley-cup-drought-could-end-in-2025-oilers-vs-panthers-odds-schedule-how-to-watch">Stanley Cup Finals</a> taking place 8 p.m. ET during the parade time window. The Army expects up to 200,000 people to attend and estimates it&#8217;ll <a href="https://apnews.com/article/military-parade-army-trump-birthday-veterans-0912f4009b4d9fc157b35bb9edf9375a">cost</a> taxpayers up to $45 million — a <a href="https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9l5srk">price Trump called &#8220;peanuts.&#8221;</a>
Portions of Washington, D.C., will be closed for the event, which will feature heavy-duty army vehicles, aircraft, military members and a fireworks show at 9:45 p.m. ET.
Given the lack of coverage by broadcast television and the parade&#8217;s competition with several sporting events, viewership for the parade will likely be low. It will likely become a political talking point for those not supporting the current administration.
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/25/01/43139381/how-many-people-watched-donald-trumps-2025-inauguration-spoiler-less-than-biden-four-years-ago">Viewership for Trump's inauguration</a> was 24.5 million, less than the 33.8 million who tuned in for President Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021. It&#8217;s also down from the 30.6 million that watched Trump's first-term inauguration in 2017. Viewers watching on streaming platforms like Rumble Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RUM#NASDAQ">RUM</a>) weren't included in the final tally.
The parade on Saturday comes as<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/06/45851810/trump-supports-arrest-of-california-governor-gavin-newsom-as-us-deploys-700-marines-to-los-angeles"> protestors in California</a> and other regions of the country bring attention to Trump&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/events/25/06/45878983/us-cities-brace-for-escalating-immigration-protests-los-angeles-enforces-curfew-national-guard-deployed-amid-trump-crackdown">immigration crackdown</a> and use of the National Guard. 'NBCUniversal Bids for MLB Rights ESPN Dropped'- WSJ

Game shows have remained incredibly popular with television viewers over the years and one of the reasons that new shows <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/05/38860861/amazon-betting-on-game-shows-for-streaming-growth-mrbeast-travis-kelce-pop-culture-jeopardy">keep getting launched</a> by media and streaming companies.
For all the people who have played along to a trivia game like "Jeopardy!" at home and answered questions for $0, there's a new game show that could make it pay to watch along.
What Happened: NBC, a unit of Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>), will soon air &#8221; Win-Win," a new trivia game that could <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/03/37809533/mrbeast-confirms-beast-games-on-amazon-prime-video-with-1-000-contestants-5m-prize-its-gonn">change game shows.</a>
The trivia show will see 40 people answer trivia questions "based on a unique nationwide survey." Viewers at home watching the show can play along through an app and win prizes alongside the players on screen.
"Win Win" is based on a format from Hello Dolly, a production company, <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/nbc-game-show-viewer-prizes-win-win-1236222491/">according </a>to the Hollywood Reporter. A version of the show will debut on ITV in the United Kingdom.
NBCUniversal has secured the licensing rights to the show internationally, with the NBC version likely up first.
"Win Win is a fresh, high-stakes format that delivers on its name by giving viewers and contestants alike the chance to walk away winners," NBC executive VP unscripted programming Sharon Vuong said.

Why It's Important: If people like watching game shows and people like winning money, the concept of "Win Win" would appear to be an early hit among viewers.
"This is exactly the type of format that defines our ambitions as a studio," Universal Television Alternative Studio President Toby Gorman said.
Gorman said the unique viewing experience could keep "audiences on the edge of their seat."
For Comcast and Universal, this could drive higher live viewership, as audiences will need to tune in during the original broadcast to participate. The company may also benefit from increased app downloads, creating opportunities for cross-promotion and targeted advertising.

Think You're A Trivia Whiz? NBC's 'Win Win' Pays You To Play From Home

BofA Securities analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich maintained a Buy rating on Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CHTR#NASDAQ">CHTR</a>) last Friday, with a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CHTR/analyst-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">price target of $450</a>.
Ehrlich noted that Charter had announced an agreement to merge with privately held Cox Communications for an equity purchase consideration of $21.9 billion and the assumption of $12.6 billion in Cox debt and lease obligations.
The $21.9 billion equity consideration is comprised of $11.9 billion in common units, $6 billion notional value in preferred units, and $4 billion in cash, the analyst said.

The combined entity's pro forma economic ownership will be 67% Charter, 23% Cox, and 10% Advance/Newhouse, according to Ehrlich. She views the $33.9 billion transaction as value accretive, noting it implies a ~6.44x EV/2025E EBITDA multiple before synergies. With $500 million in synergies—likely a conservative estimate—the multiple drops below 6x by year three.
Ehrlich said the deal will expand Charter's reach to 69.5 million passings, 37.6 million customers, and 35.9 million broadband subscribers. It also allows Charter to apply its pricing and packaging strategy across an additional 12.3 million passings and pursue mid-sized commercial and enterprise markets more aggressively.
As per Ehrlich, the deal should not present significant regulatory hurdles and should likely close in mid-2026. The companies do not have overlapping footprints, and 69.5 million passings is only ~5 million larger than Comcast Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) (64 million) and also not significantly larger than AT&amp;T Inc&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/T#NYSE">T</a>) (and AT&amp;T also offers nationwide wireless).
Time Warner Cable&nbsp;/Charter deal in 2015/2016 received regulatory approval in less than 12 months, and the environment has become significantly more competitive.
Ehrlich noted that Comcast is unlikely to present a competing bid due to a likely more difficult regulatory path.
The analyst expects the Cox merger to boost revenue growth across broadband, video, and mobile, improve margins, increase free cash flow, and reduce leverage. While integration may pose challenges, Charter's strong execution history and improving broadband and video trends should support EBITDA growth.
CHTR Price Action: At the last check on Monday, Charter Communications stock was down 2.1% to $418.27.

Starbucks (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SBUX#NASDAQ">SBUX</a>) is brewing up some big decisions for its China business, including a potential stake deal that could <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/05/45428678/starbucks-explores-stake-sale-in-china-business-valued-at-billions-amid-sluggish-growth-intense-competition-from-likes-of-luckin-coffee-report">fetch several billion dollars</a>. 
The coffee giant has been quietly chatting with tech firms and private equity players, hoping someone might want a sip of its 7,750-store China portfolio. 
But with local rival Luckin Coffee chugging ahead — pulling in $1.2 billion last quarter versus Starbucks' $740 million — the cold truth is the Seattle-based company is having trouble navigating the market.
And it&#8217;s not alone. McDonald's and Yum! Brands both sold <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/restaurants/25/05/45360322/restaurant-stocks-rebound-as-us-china-tariff-truce-offers-sector-relief-whats-going-on" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stakes in their China operations</a>.
As for Starbucks, the franchise&#8217;s stock price has cooled faster than an unattended latte. It&#8217;s down 25% since February. Meanwhile, Wall Street is not impressed, as Starbucks missed earnings estimates and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/45104438/starbucks-stock-tumbles-on-q2-earnings-ceo-says-progress-is-happening-below-the-surface">reported a global sales dip</a>.

Axios first reported the deal. Charter seeks to create the largest U.S. cable TV and broadband provider by subscribers, surpassing Comcast Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>). It will also take on significant debt — about $12 billion worth. The combined entity will be called Cox Communications and will retain the Spectrum brand for consumers. Simultaneously, Charter will complete its all-stock acquisition of Liberty Media, announced last fall.</li>

The deal will require approval at one of the NFL's owners meetings, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-05-15/nfl-s-49ers-to-sell-stakes-at-record-8-5-billion-valuation?srnd=phx-deals&amp;sref=TBDibEcD">per</a> Bloomberg.</li>

<li>Adam Waterous is turning up the heat in the oil sands drama. The Canadian oil baron&#8217;s Strathcona Resources plans to take a C$6 billion ($4 billion) bid for MEG Energy straight to shareholders, according <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-05-16/waterous-strathcona-to-make-takeover-bid-for-meg-energy?srnd=phx-deals&amp;sref=TBDibEcD">to</a> Bloomberg. Previously, MEG's board gave Waterous the cold shoulder. The offer, about C$23.27 per share, will hit the official paperwork trail within two weeks. If successful, it would be another feather in Waterous' hard hat after years of deal-making. On the same day, Strathcona also announced it's unloading its Montney shale assets for C$2.8 billion. </li>

<li>Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DKS#NYSE">DKS</a>) is lacing up to buy Foot Locker (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FL#NYSE">FL</a>) for about $2.4 billion. It's the second major footwear <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/05/45338051/skechers-set-to-go-private-amidst-tariff-drama-hopes-new-partnership-will-enable-the-companys-long-term-growth">deal this month</a>, hot on the heels of 3G Capital's $9 billion Skechers buy. While Foot Locker brings 2,400 smaller, urban stores to the table, Dick's offers around 800 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/05/45435748/dicks-sporting-goods-to-acquire-foot-locker-at-66-premium">suburban big-box behemoths</a>. </li>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Off The Block</h1>

<li>Robinhood Markets Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HOOD#NASDAQ">HOOD</a>) wants to acquire Canadian crypto trading platform WonderFi Technologies in an all-cash deal valued at approximately C$250 million ($178.9 million). The deal will be executed through a statutory plan of arrangement, with Robinhood acquiring all outstanding WonderFi common shares. WonderFi's largest shareholder, Mogo, which owns roughly 82 million shares, has already signed a voting support agreement in favor of the transaction. Other directors, officers and shareholders holding about 28% of WonderFi's outstanding shares have also <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/05/45390595/robinhood-shares-jump-nearly-10-following-acquisition-deal-for-wonderfi-whats-going-on">agreed to support the deal</a>.</li>

<li>Pan American Silver Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PAAS#NYSE">PAAS</a>) and MAG Silver Corp. <li>Consider it a tough prescription for survival: Rite Aid will have less retail square footage, but hopefully fewer financial headaches now that it filed for bankruptcy. About 115 stores will close as part of its ongoing Chapter 11 plan. After <a href="https://restructuring.ra.kroll.com/RiteAid2025/Home-Index">filing</a> earlier this month, the pharmacy chain initially revealed 47 store closures, then added 68 more in a May 9 court filing. That brings the total to nearly 10% of its 1,240 locations, spread across 10 of the 15 states it operates in. </li>
<li>Bayer AG is making another attempt to weed out its legal troubles over Roundup, the popular herbicide linked to cancer in thousands of lawsuits. The company is trying to settle many cases in Missouri state court, but is also prepping a backup plan: putting Monsanto — the U.S. maker of Roundup — into bankruptcy. According <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/bayer-seeks-new-roundup-settlement-while-exploring-monsanto-bankruptcy-35bf28de">to</a> the Wall Street Journal, Bayer has brought in restructuring pros from Latham &amp; Watkins and AlixPartners to explore options. Bayer bought Monsanto in 2018 for $63 billion. A San Francisco jury quickly found Monsanto liable for a man's cancer, setting off years of litigation. Bayer insists Roundup is safe, citing EPA reviews, but the lawsuits have taken their tollv—vso much so that the company has warned it might stop making the product altogether. Its stock has dropped about 75% since the Monsanto deal.</li>

<li>Li-Cycle Holdings Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LICY#NYSE">LICY</a>) is filing for creditor protection in Canada and Chapter 15 bankruptcy in the U.S. It's now planning a court-supervised garage sale for its assets. One potential buyer? Mining giant Glencore ADR (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLNCY#OTC">GLNCY</a>), which has agreed to bid at least $40 million for some of the Lithium-ion battery recycler&#8217;s assets.</li>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">On The Deal Hunt</h1>
Today, Benzinga spotlights Capstone Holding Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAPS#NASDAQ">CAPS</a>). The company&#8217;s shares were up 46.34% at last check Friday, trading at about $2.40.

The Illinois-based building materials distributor reaffirmed its 2025 goals of $100 million in revenue and $10 million in adjusted EBITDA, fueled by steady growth and M&amp;A shopping sprees. 
CEO Matthew Lipman says the company is on track to double in size, snapping up deals at 4–6x EBITDA with up to 45% paid in non-cash consideration.
Capstone's Instone unit held strong and continues to push proprietary products with names such as Toro and Pangea.
The company also locked in a flexible equity credit line, but promises to only use it for deals i<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45468192/capstones-big-swing-on-acquisitions-sends-shares-soaring">mmediately accretive to earnings</a>.
