On Monday, Eversource Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ES#NYSE">ES</a>) inked a deal to sell Aquarion Water Company to the newly created Aquarion Water Authority for $2.4 billion, including $1.6 billion in cash <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/b43254744/eversource-energy-announces-sale-of-aquarion-water-company" rel="noreferrer noopener">and $800 million in net debt</a>.
The sale, valued at 1.7x the December 2024 rate base, will help Eversource reduce parent company debt and reinvest in its core electric and natural gas businesses.
The company expects to record a $300 million loss on the sale in the fourth quarter of 2024, including $140 million in estimated taxes, but it reaffirmed its 5%- 7% EPS <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">growth target through 2028</a>.
The sale is subject to regulatory approvals from utility commissions in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire and other customary conditions. The transaction is expected to close in late 2025.
Eversource Chairman, President and CEO Joe Nolan said, &#8220;Since our acquisition of Aquarion in 2017, we have built on Aquarion&#8217;s longstanding track record of superior customer service, industry-leading reliability and operational success to help them become the largest investor-owned water utility in New England and seventh largest in the country.&#8221;
&#8220;This transaction reinforces our commitment to our core electric and natural gas operations as the largest regulated utility in New England, allowing us to optimize our portfolio and strengthening our balance sheet while reinvesting capital to benefit our customers.&#8221;
Eversource expects to release fourth-quarter <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">results on February 12, 2025</a>.

Eversource Strengthens Focus on Electric, Gas Business with $2.4 Billion Aquarion Sale

Subject to certain closing adjustments, the aggregate enterprise value of the sale is approximately $2.4 billion, which includes approximately $1.6 billion in cash and $800 million of net debt that will be extinguished at closing.&nbsp;
The proceeds from the sale will enable Eversource to pay down parent company debt while efficiently reinvesting capital into its core electric and natural gas businesses, enabling additional investments in reliability for customers and strengthening Eversource's financial position.
&nbsp;As a result of this transaction, Eversource expects to record a loss on the planned sale of Aquarion of approximately $300 million in its results for the fourth quarter of 2024. Eversource&#8217;s Chairman, Joe Nolan, emphasized that the acquisition would provide a unique opportunity to support economic development, create jobs, and drive forward clean energy initiatives.
The purchase of the Mystic property also offers a chance to enhance grid reliability, mitigate potential congestion in the regional transmission system, and ease the integration of renewables. A hotter-than-expected September Consumer Price Index inflation report, combined with a surprising spike in weekly jobless claims, weighed on major stock indices in early New York trading Thursday, while sparking diverging performances <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">among sectors</a>.
Technology and consumer discretionary stocks led the declines, while utilities outperformed, with the latter rebounding from significant losses earlier in the week.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Inflation Tops Estimates, Claims Likely Affected By Hurricane Helene</h3>
The annual headline inflation rate dipped slightly from 2.5% in August to 2.4% in September, but came in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/10/41270761/september-inflation-hotter-than-expected-jobless-claims-spike-the-most-in-over-a-">above economist forecasts of 2.3%</a>.
Despite this marking the sixth consecutive decline in annual inflation, core inflation — which excludes volatile food and energy — rose unexpectedly from 3.2% to 3.3%, marking its first increase since March 2023.
Monthly inflation readings also came in slightly above expectations for both headline and core metrics, though they showed no acceleration from August's growth pace.
With the Federal Reserve&#8217;s heightened focus on labor market dynamics, markets closely watched the latest jobless claims report, which revealed a surprising jump to 254,000, the highest since July 2023. 
Some experts, like Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank, attributed the spike to temporary disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene and said he anticipates similar effects from Hurricane Milton in the coming weeks.
Overall, the two key data releases pushed the S&amp;P 500 down from record highs reached the previous day while boosting expectations for a 25-basis-point rate cut in November. Notably, market-implied odds of a November rate cut inched up from 76% to 86% after the reports.

Stocks leading gains within the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>) included NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEE#NYSE">NEE</a>), Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DUK#NYSE">DUK</a>) and Eversource Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ES#NYSE">ES</a>), up 2.5%, 1.5% and 1.4% respectively. 
Dragging down the tech sector, tracked by the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), were First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FSLR#NASDAQ">FSLR</a>), down 6.3%, Super Micro Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMCI#NASDAQ">SMCI</a>), down 4.6%, and Enphase Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ENPH#NASDAQ">ENPH</a>), down 3.3%. 
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Ross Stores Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ROST#NASDAQ">ROST</a>) and Lululemon Athletica Inc.
