U.S. stock markets saw a strong recovery on Tuesday, with both the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 climbing over 2%, nearly offsetting Monday&#8217;s losses. Investors took advantage of recent volatility to buy the dip, showing continued confidence in the U.S. economy&#8217;s ability to avoid a recession. 
Gains were observed in both small-cap and blue-chip stocks, reflecting broad improvement in market sentiment.
The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often referred to as the market&#8217;s fear gauge, decreased by almost 40% on Tuesday after spiking 65% on Monday. 
According to the FedWatch Tool, the likelihood of a 50-basis-point interest rate cut decreased to 90% Monday to 64% Tuesday. 
As traders reassess Fed rate cuts, Treasury yields increased during the day, with the 10-year yield rising by 11 basis points to 3.9% and the two-year yield climbing 9 basis points to 4.01%.
The rebound of the U.S. dollar was supported by rising yields and diminished expectations of a larger Federal Reserve rate cut in September. The dollar increased by 0.8% against the low-yielding Japanese yen, breaking a streak of five consecutive days of losses.
In terms of macroeconomic data, the day was relatively quiet, with only June&#8217;s trade figures making news. The U.S. trade deficit narrowed to $73.1 billion in June 2024 from a revised 20-month high of $75 billion in May, slightly above market forecasts of a $72.5-billion gap. Exports increased by 1.5% to $265.9 billion, the second-highest on record, while imports grew by a more modest 0.6% to $339 billion.
Gold and oil prices both decreased by 0.7% and 0.8%, respectively, marking their fourth consecutive session of declines.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rebounded by 4.9% after experiencing a 7% drop on Monday.

Wall Street Rebounds After Selloff, VIX Falls, Dollar Surges Against Yen: What's Driving Markets Tuesday?

Expeditors International Of Washington, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EXPD#NYSE">EXPD</a>) reported a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/08/b40187659/expeditors-reports-second-quarter-2024-eps-of-1-24" rel="noreferrer noopener">second-quarter fiscal 2024 revenue</a> increase of 9% year-over-year to $2.439 billion, beating the consensus of $2.28 billion.
Airfreight tonnage volume increased by 15%, and ocean container volume decreased by 3%. EPS of $1.24, down 5% YoY, missing the consensus of $1.26.
Operating income decreased 9.9% to $223.92 million; the margin contracted 191 bps to 9.2%.

EXPD's cash flow from operations for the quarter totaled $126.769 million, down from $158.446 million a year ago. The company held cash and cash equivalents at the end of the period of $1.271 billion.
The company returned $205 million to shareholders in common stock repurchases and dividends during the quarter.
"Air market capacity has been constrained by e-commerce demand, and ocean routing has been significantly disrupted by geopolitical events in the Red Sea, causing less frequent services due to blank sailings, longer transit times as well as port congestion. We have continued to adjust to the disruptions and uneven demand, keeping costs in check while we work to bring efficiency back in line with historical expectations," commented Jeffrey S. Musser, president and Chief Executive Officer.
"Expenses are still high compared to our 30% efficiency target (operating income as a percentage of revenue less directly related cost of transportation and other expenses), with compensation being our largest and most variable operating expense," commented Bradley S. Powell, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

Cues From Last Session:
Wall Street closed Monday&#8217;s session notably lower, although off its intraday lows. The global equity market plunge set in motion by the Japanese market on Monday spilled over into the U.S. The major averages opened notably lower but a report that showed that the service sector moved into expansion territory helped them trim some of the losses. Yet the averages closed the session sharply lower.
The S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite fell for a third straight session, settling at three-month lows, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average retreated to its lowest since June 14.
The sell-off was across the board, with the IT, communication services and consumer discretionary stocks plunging hard.

The recent correction is healthy for the market, according to WisdomTree Senior Economist and Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel. Volatility has finally returned to the market, the economist said, adding that this equity risk is what creates a premium long-term return.
A correction of 5-10% from the highs is healthy, Siegel said. &#8220;I would be more worried had the market continued to surge higher with no correction and created more bubble-like conditions,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;In the short run, if the Fed does not indicate that it will react soon, the outlook is very unsettled.&#8221;
Carson Group&#8217;s Chief Market Strategist Ryan Detrick sees light at the end of the tunnel. Drawing on historical data, the strategist noted that when the S&amp;P 500 Index falls by at least 1% on Thursday, Friday, and Monday, strong returns are typically observed three months later. Historically, this pattern has resulted in gains 90% of the time, with an average increase of around 10%.

<div>The first quarter at Expeditors International (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/expd#NASDAQ">EXPD</a>) saw an increase in tonnage handled but a drop in revenues and an even bigger decline in the cost of acquiring transportation.</div>

However, it also marked a milestone: It was the first quarter since the third quarter of 2021 when year-on-year tonnage increased for both airfreight and ocean freight. There had been year-on-year comparisons when airfreight grew in the interim but not for more than two years have both categories grown from the corresponding quarter a year earlier.

The overall tonnage increase at Expeditors was 4% for airfreight and 2% for ocean freight. In airfreight, the month-by-month increase was 6% in January and February and 1% in March. For ocean freight, a 6% decline in January was followed by a 6% increase in February and an 8% increase in March. Expeditors does not release actual tonnage figures, just the rate of change from the prior year.

Despite the gains in tonnage handled, revenues declined 15% to $2.2 billion, down from $2.6 billion a year earlier.

The cost of transportation declined even more, down 17% to $1.43 billion from $1.71 billion in the first quarter of 2023. Salaries declined less than revenue, down 7%, which helped lead to a 22% drop in operating income — a far bigger percentage decline than the decrease in revenue. Net earnings were down 25%, to $169.1 million from $226 million. 

"Both air and ocean carrier capacity continue to grow, further pressuring rates that have already come down significantly from their peaks" CEO Jeffrey Musser said in the earnings statement. "We have adapted to this current environment by keeping headcount and other costs in check, while continuing to drive efficiency back towards our historical expectations."

According to SeekingAlpha, GAAP earnings per share of $1.17 was 10 cents better than the consensus forecast. The $2.2 billion in revenue fell short of consensus only by $20 million. 

Expeditors' net income per share a year ago was $1.45.

Wall Street reaction to the earnings was muted. At approximately 12:40 p.m. EDT, Expeditors' stock was down $1.42, to $114.22, a decline of 1.23%.

Employee head count declined in key markets, falling in North America to 6,839 from 7,455 a year earlier. Other regions with smaller head counts also declined, and the end result was that employment at Expeditors fell to 18,403 from 19,681 compared to a year ago.

Specifically, Musser said ocean capacity has grown with "an increase in the number of vessels coming on line and out of sync with demand."

In the air, capacity is growing "as profit minded carriers carefully grow capacity to meet strong passenger demand, particularly for international travel, which has negatively impacted air cargo rates and our profit per kilo."

But tonnage managed to increase "as buy rates fell faster than sell rates in certain markets" he added.

Expeditors does not hold an earnings call with analysts. CFO Bradley Cooper said in the prepared statement accompanying the earnings that the employee reduction came mostly through attrition, "as we remain focused on aligning headcount with tonnage and volumes shipped."

He added that the only area where head count increased was information systems, "as we continue to enhance and bolster our network security." Expeditors was the victim of a cyberattack in early 2022.
