Sometimes, you look at a wildly successful company, and it just clicks—of course, it works, and of course, it made millions. But hindsight is always 20/20. The real challenge? Spotting that golden opportunity when it's just an idea on paper and your own money is at stake.
Mark Cuban <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/02/43885487/billionaire-mark-cuban-said-the-first-step-to-getting-rich-is-giving-things-up-drink-water-eat-mac-and-cheese-and-save-every-penny">has built a fortune</a> on his ability to see potential early. He became a billionaire after selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo for $5.7 billion in 1999, later parlaying that wealth into everything from owning the Dallas Mavericks to becoming a fan-favorite investor on "Shark Tank." But even billionaires don't bat a thousand.
For Cuban, one of his biggest financial missteps was passing on an early investment in Uber (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>) —a decision that cost him billions.

The $250,000 That Could Have Turned Into $4.12 Billion
Back in 2009, Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick approached Cuban with a chance to invest in the then-fledgling ride-sharing startup. The valuation? $10 million.
"Just think: If I would've given him $250,000 on a [$10 million] valuation, it'd be billions," Cuban said during an <a href="https://www.peacocktv.com/watch-online/tv/hart-to-heart/6188944115208130112/seasons/3/episodes/mark-cuban-episode-6/5acb7c01-0eff-33d1-8121-c542ab5bacb8">appearance on Kevin Hart's "Hart to Heart</a>."
And he's not wrong. If Cuban had invested $250,000 for a 2.5% stake in Uber at a $10 million valuation, that stake would have been worth $2.05 billion when Uber went public in May 2019 at an $82 billion valuation.
That means Cuban missed out on a 819,900% return. Now, nearly six years later it's even more of a sting.&nbsp;
His shares would be worth $4.12 billion today, based on Uber's $165 billion market capitalization as of this month 2025.
The return on investment would be approximately 1,647,900%.&nbsp;
"I mean, I've done OK. But, still," said Cuban, whose net worth sits at an estimated $5.7 billion.

A History With Kalanick—And a Price That Didn't Feel Right
Cuban wasn't a stranger to Kalanick at the time. In 2005, he had invested $1.7 million in Kalanick's previous venture, Red Swoosh, a peer-to-peer networking startup. <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/19/mark-cuban-passed-on-uber-stake-that-would-be-worth-2point3-billion-now.html">According to&nbsp; CNBC in 2023</a>, that bet paid off—when Kalanick sold the company to Akamai Technologies (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AKAM#NASDAQ">AKAM</a>) in 2007 for $18.7 million, Cuban saw a small but profitable return.
So when Kalanick pitched Uber, Cuban was intrigued.
"He comes to me, like, first off [and says]: ‘I've got this thing. It's going to replace taxi cabs&#8230;'" Cuban recalled. "I was like, ‘I love it.'"
But then came the valuation.
Cuban balked at the $10 million price tag. "I said, ‘I'll do it at [a] $5 million valuation&#8230;' for Uber!" he told CNBC.
That counteroffer didn't go over well. "[Kalanick] never came back to me. He got somebody else. Whoops," Cuban admitted.

Even Kevin Hart Missed Out
Turns out, Cuban wasn't the only one who failed to see Uber's potential. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/02/43496334/sounds-like-murderville-both-mark-cuban-and-kevin-hart-passed-on-a-startup-that-grew-into-a-giant-leaving-them-regretting-it">Hart also had a shot</a> at investing but turned it down for an even simpler reason—it just sounded ridiculous.
Hart recalled that Uber investor and music manager Troy Carter tried to get him in early, but the idea of sharing a ride with strangers seemed absurd. "<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/02/43496334/sounds-like-murderville-both-mark-cuban-and-kevin-hart-passed-on-a-startup-that-grew-into-a-giant-leaving-them-regretting-it">Sounds like Murderville</a>," he said.
That skepticism cost him—big time. Hart estimated that his would-be investment of up to $75,000 could have netted him "$100-plus million" if he had jumped in.
Learning From the Mistake
Cuban didn't just turn down Uber—he also warned Kalanick about the roadblocks ahead. He correctly predicted that the company would face regulatory nightmares and resistance from taxi commissions trying to shut it down.
But missing out on Uber taught him a lesson: sometimes, gut instinct and early adoption matter more than haggling over valuation. And this time, he wasn't going to let an opportunity pass him by.
Cuban on <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/mcuban.bsky.social/post/3lijrc2clvs2q">shared on BlueSky</a> on Feb. 19 that he found his latest investment, Fetii, through an unexpected source—his daughter. "My daughter used Fetii nonstop with her friends and raved about it," Cuban said. "She told me I should invest. So I reached out to Matthew, and the more I heard about it, the more I liked it." Matthew is Fetti's co-founder and CEO.&nbsp;

Fetii, a Texas-based group rideshare startup, is tackling a problem that Uber and Lyft (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LYFT#NASDAQ">LYFT</a>) have never solved—how to transport large groups efficiently without the hassle of splitting into multiple cars. The company, founded in 2020, has already expanded to 68 cities across six states and moves over 200,000 passengers per month. Its seamless <a href="https://media.hubtas.com/2025/02/19/mark-cuban-invests-in-fetii-the-group-rideshare-app-solving-uber-and-lyfts-biggest-flaw-after-his-daughter-raved-about-it-she-told-me-i-should-invest/">QR code-based payment system</a> and $5-per-person fare structure have made it a favorite among college students.
Cuban's $7.35 million investment in Fetii, alongside Y Combinator and Goodwater Capital, proves he's serious about not making the same mistake twice.
At SXSW in 2017, he made it clear: "If you really believe and you really have something that you think is going to disrupt the world, bring it to me," he said. "I won't make the same mistake twice."

RBC Capital Maintains Outperform on Lyft, Lowers Price Target to $21

Shares of Lyft Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LYFT#NASDAQ">LYFT</a>) were trading lower on Wednesday, despite the company reporting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/02/43641962/lyft-q4-earnings-revenue-beat-gross-bookings-up-15-new-buyback-our-biggest-competition-is-inertia">a fourth-quarter revenue beat</a>.
The company reported its quarterly results amid an <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">exciting earnings season</a>. Here are some key analyst takeaways.
Cantor Fitzgerald On Lyft
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/596f57cb35f48b00011db3ec/deepak-mathivanan">Analyst Deepak Mathivanan</a> maintained a Neutral rating, while cutting the price target from $15 to $14.
Lyft reported its fourth-quarter bookings 1% short of Street expectations, while delivering an earnings beat, Mathivanan said in a note. For the first quarter, the company guided to rides growth in the mid-teens and bookings growth of 10%-14% year-on-year, the midpoint of which fell short of the current consensus, he added.
The disappointing bookings guidance reflects a "deterioration in industry pricing trends" since the latter part of the fourth quarter, the analyst stated. While Lyft is making "steady progress on key product initiatives" to improve its rideshare services, this is being offset by the challenging pricing environment and "brings meaningful uncertainties to near-term growth trajectory," he further wrote.
Piper Sandler On Lyft
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5981fdcbc1f558000155e858/thomas-champion">Analyst Thomas Champion</a> maintained a Neutral rating, while reducing the price target from $23 to $18.
Lyft reported gross bookings of $4.28 billion for the fourth quarter, missing Street expectations of $4.32 billion, Champion said. "FCF conversion was again strong and ride frequency improved again sequentially," he wrote.
The company completed 219 million rides in the quarter, up 15% year-on-year, while active riders grew by 10% year-on-year to around 24.7 million, the analyst stated. The weaker bookings result and guidance was due to pricing headwinds resulting from competition, which "has persisted through January," he added.
Wedbush On Lyft
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/58459503ee7bf6000154d075/scott-devitt">Analyst Scott Devitt</a> maintained a Neutral rating, while slashing the price target from $18 to $16.
Lyft's total bookings and net revenues grew by 14.9% and 26.6% year-on-year, respectively, but both missed Street estimates by around 1%, Devitt said. Despite lower-than-expected bookings, adjusted EBITDA came in at $113 million, beating consensus of $104 million, he added.
Management guided to gross bookings growth of 10%-14% year-on-year, with the midpoint coming in below Street expectations by around 280 basis points, the analyst stated. Regarding the full year, Lyft&#8217;s partnership with Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DAL#NYSE">DAL</a>) will end in April 2025, "which management anticipates will impact rides and gross bookings growth by ~1ppt and ~2ppts, respectively, starting in 2Q25," he further wrote.

JPMorgan On Lyft
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/591479b8290fa7000138e4b4/doug-anmuth">Analyst Doug Anmuth</a> reiterated an Overweight rating, while cutting the price target from $19 to $16.
Lyft&#8217;s execution has improved over the past year, with the focus intensifying on "product innovation and service for both drivers and riders," Anmuth said. These initiatives drove the upside in Active Riders, up 10% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, and adjusted EBITDA, he added.
"However, we believe Lyft is facing an increasingly competitive rideshare landscape as of late 4Q and into 1Q," the analyst wrote. While Lyft noted pricing pressure and competition, rival Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>) said it expects UberX prices in the U.S. to rise only marginally in 2025, he further stated.
Roth Capital Partners On Lyft
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5e3c22772d37ce00019ceb1f/rohit-kulkarni">Analyst Rohit Kulkarni</a> reiterated a Neutral rating and price target of $16.
"During 2024, LYFT has managed to report two upside quarters and two downside quarters," Kulkarni said in a note. Competitive price dynamics, which began in the latter part of the fourth quarter, are expected to impact gross bookings growth in the first quarter, he added.
"LYFT highlighted incremental and unclear headwind from the loss of Delta partnership which could weigh on 2Q GB growth," the analyst stated. While the company's fundamentals and product portfolio have improved, pricing and the end of the partnership with Delta "are somewhat negative," he added.
Needham On Lyft
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/587635595064ed000140010c/scott-berg">Analyst Bernie McTernan</a> reaffirmed a Hold rating on the stock.
Lyft indicated that the lower pricing dynamic that started in the last couple of weeks of December was experienced "across all markets," McTernan said. Although the decline was less steep in January, it brought the base pricing per mile for the month to the lowest level in five quarters, he added.
Prices are likely to be "lower for longer," the analyst stated. The company is likely to record "slight acceleration" in rides growth for the rest of the year, "as the Leap Day compares ease," he further wrote.
LYFT Price Action: Shares of Lyft had declined by 6.2% to $13.48 at the time of publication on Wednesday.
